It's about affluence, it's wealth, and it's the ability to go and buy or do something. For Warhol and a whole range of artists the dollar was a very, very exciting topic, for Warhol more so than most,\" she says.Warhol first discovered the dollar as a source of inspiration in the early 1960s.Westphal says: \"In 1962 Warhol was having a drink with one of his close friends and he said: 'What do you think I should paint?' And she said: 'My Andy, you should paint what you love most.' To which Andy replied: 'Hmmm, I guess I love money the most. And with that he started painting a wonderful picture behind me which is called the Silver Certificate from 1962, it's the only hand-painted single dollar by Andy Warhol.\"His bold paintings inspired his contemporaries and successors, most notably New York street artist Keith Haring. In one of his early shows Haring featured a bold, red dollar symbol inside the head of one of his stick men. This painting from 1982, Untitled, is expected to fetch up to 350,000 UK pounds (534,600 US dollars).French accumulation artist Arman created this sculpture in 1970 by casting a female torso in plexiglass and stuffing it with dollar bills. It is called Venus aux Dollars and is one of only 20, it is expected to make up to 22,000 UK pounds (33,600 US dollars).Scott Campbell's 3D skull, Cloth Skull Cube, from 2011, and Chinese artist Liu Zheng's 1 US$ Bank Note, 2002, are some contemporary takes on the dollar theme. They are expected to make up to 15,000 and 3,500 UK pounds respectively (22,900 and 5,350 US dollars). But really the auction is all about Warhol, and there is just as much interest in his later works from the 1980s.Dollar Signs, this colourful acrylic on silkscreen from 1981, could make 6.5 million UK pounds (9.9 million US dollars) when it goes under the hammer.Cheyenne Westphal says: \"What is then exciting is in the 1980s when Warhol was already a truly global superstar he came back to the dollar and he made a series of large dollar signs, one simple big dollar, very colourful, very painterly, and another big dollar where he repeats it across the surface many times. And it was almost a late flourishing and coming back to a subject matter that had captivated him as early as 1962.\"One of Warhol's largest pieces in the auction is Dollar Sign, also from 1981.This time it features a colourful dollar set against a grey backdrop.Dollar Sign is expected to make up to 6 million UK pounds (9.1 million US dollars).\"I think the dollar is still unique in many, many ways and what Andy said is that: 'I simply like the dollar the best, it's the best designed money.' And I think that love for the visual side of the dollar was something he adored so I think he would probably be still working on the dollar, and what's so exciting is that it would feel as relevant today as it did then,\" says Westphal.Over the last 60 years the dollar as a symbol has continued to attract and inspire artists - it is still shorthand for wealth, power and the American dream. The collection of Warhol paintings for auction represents the most important group of Warhol's dollar paintings in private hands. They are considered to be 'museum worthy' and it's possible some of the major international art galleries will attempt to bid for them. The auction takes place in London on July 1-2, 2015.London, UK - 8 June 20151.
