Wide of people carrying wreaths of flowersSTORYLINE:On January 5th 2015 Tunisia's largest political party chose an ex-interior minister with a long history with the old regime as its candidate for prime minister.Habib Essid, 65, met with the country's president Beji Caid Essebsi, on January 5th, and now has a month to form a coalition and name a cabinet.Essid occupied several posts under former dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, including in the Interior Ministry, which manages the police. After the revolution that overthrew Ben Ali in 2011, he was the interior minister in one of the transitional governments.Tunisia completed its political transition with a string of elections in the final months of 2014, with the most votes going to Nida Tunis, a party that includes many members of the old regime and has promised stability after a transition marked by unrest.***Habib Essid officially became Tunisia's prime minister on February 6th after his predecessor, Mehdi Jomaa formally handed over power during a ceremony in Tunis.Essid and his government were sworn in during the ceremony that came a day after Tunisia's parliament overwhelmingly approved the country's first full-term post-revolutionary government. In his speech during the event, Jomaa, who was the head of a technocratic government until parliamentary elections in October 2014, praised the success of the 2011 revolution and expressed hope for a better future for the country. While recognising the achievements made over the past four years, the new prime minister acknowledged the challenges faced by his government.\"We have no other choice but to work towards supporting political and social stability and to start establishing major reforms in strategic sectors to create wealth, and to respond to the aspirations of our people from all classes and backgrounds,\" Essid said.Getting the economy to pre-revolution levels is Essid's government's top priority. Although declining, Tunisia's unemployment rate still remains high at 15 percent, and inflation reached 5.6 percent in September 2014.According to the World Bank the country's economy is set to grow by 2.7 percent this year, up from 2.4 percent last year. With a new constitution and the organisation of fair and free parliamentary and presidential elections in 2014, Tunisia is the most positive example among the countries that went through the so called Arab Spring.***Attackers opened fire on March 18th at a major museum in Tunisia's capital, gunning down at least 22 tourists as dozens more sprinted to safety. Two gunmen were also killed, but some attackers may have escaped, authorities said. The attack on the famed National Bardo Museum in Tunis was the first on a tourist site in years in Tunisia, a shaky young democracy that has struggled to keep Islamic extremist violence at bay.It wasn't clear who the attackers were but security forces immediately flooded the area.Tunisia's parliament building, next to the museum, was evacuated.Tunis residents on March 18th strongly condemned the attack.Wounded people were being brought to hospitals in Tunis.Ambulances were seen rushing victims to Charles Nicolle hospital, hours after the attack against the National Bardo Museum in Tunis.Charles Nicolle hospital has received nine bodies so far, officials said, and 16 injured people from Poland, Italy, France, Japan and Belgium. The hospital was under tight security as many local residents gathered outside to learn about the latest developments or to offer their support.\"I came to give (my blood). I heard about the terrible attack in Bardo. I'm a Tunisian citizen, I love Tunisia, I love my country. I don't know how to help it or support it, so the least it I can do is to support it with a drop of blood,\" said Najet Belhaj. Two or three other gunmen may be at large according to Tunisian authorities.World leaders offered their support to Tunisia's government. The prime minister promised extra security in tourist zones and asked residents to remain alert.***Tunisians flocked to Bourguiba Avenue for a rally on March 18th, hours after a deadly attack at a major museum in the capital, Tunis.Tunisia's Prime Minister Habib Essid said a total of 21 people had been killed, including the two gunmen who opened fire at the famed National Bardo Museum. The victims included 17 foreign tourists - five from Japan, four from Italy, two from Columbia, two from Spain, and one each from Australia, Poland and France and one whose nationality has not yet been verified.Essid said 44 people were wounded, among them: 13 Italians, seven French, four Japanese, two South Africans, one Pole, one Russian and six Tunisians. At the rally held in solidarity with the victims, one participant said extremism is the \"plague that has became omnipresent in our society.\"Another Tunis resident taking part in the event said, \"There is no clash of civilizations, but a war by lost people against the Islamic civilization, the western civilization, the world civilization.\"The attack on National Bardo was the first in years on a tourist site in Tunisia.***Defying the extremists, hundreds of Tunisians rallied on March 19th at the National Bardo Museum, stepping around trails of blood and broken glass to proclaim their solidarity with the victims of an attack by Islamic militants there a day earlier that claimed 23 lives. The radical Islamic State Group claimed responsibility on March 19th for the attack on the famed Tunis museum that left 23 people dead, scores of tourists wounded and upended the country's struggling tourism industry.Tunisian security forces, meanwhile, arrested nine people, the president's office said, adding that five of them were directly connected to March 18th's attack on the Bardo by two gunmen who were later slain by police. The other four suspects who were arrested in central Tunisia were part of a cell supporting those involved in the attack, the statement said.Razor wire ringed the museum entrance on March 19th and security forces guarded major thoroughfares in Tunis, the capital.Later in the afternoon, authorities opened the gates of the museum for a rally in defiance of the bloodshed. About 500 people held a moment of silence amid the shattered glass before singing the national anthem.Participants included black-robed judges and lawyers, families with children and teenagers swathed in the red-and-white Tunisian flag. Many also carried bouquets of flowers for the victims.\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class='action-container flex justify-between'\u003e\n\u003cbutton aria-expanded='false'
