STORY-LINE:Experimental sounds fill the room as independent artist and producer Ismail Hosny sound checks ahead of a gig. He's billed alongside a Palestinian rapper and a Dutch rock band. This is the closing night of Cairo's Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (D-CAF), now in its fourth year of celebrating alternative arts in the Egyptian capital. The Cairo contemporary arts scene has flourished since 2012, when a less regulated atmosphere allowed space for street art, festivals and new music venues in the centre of the capital. Hosny and his musical and business partner Hussein Sherbini are key players in the new wave of electronic music emerging from Cairo. They and a third partner founded studio Epic 101 in November 2011, following Sherbini's six month stint in Los Angeles doing a music production course.Their original goal was to sign artists to their label, but instead Epic 101 has focussed on studio hire, post-production services for television and a six week music production course. The course started in February 2013, and is now hosting its 20th class and boasts about 160 graduates. Sherbini shows his students how to record live instruments and then use the recordings in a production mix. The music production course offers a relatively stable source of revenue in an industry where live performance earnings and album sales are often sparse. It is also further evidence of the Epic 101 crew's role in Cairo's flourishing electronic music scene. But Sherbini and Hosny resist tying the music scene's development directly to the 2011 revolution. They don't relate any of their success of the last four years to the uprising that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak. They complain that Western interest in independent Egyptian music is too focussed on cliched sounds, instead of the boundary-pushing noises they produce which they say could sit well in Berlin or London. The duo have toured Germany, France and other European musical hot spots, but they are not booked as a tribute act to the Tahrir Square protests. In fact, Hosny argues, the \"flavour of the month\" syndrome following the revolution pigeon-holed contemporary Egyptian music, favouring mainstream Egyptian music known as Shaabi and all but ignoring the alternative music scene. \"But of course there is a link, perhaps indirectly, between the revolution and art,\" says Hosny. \"The revolution was a very big event that affected musicians subconsciously in some way. But the idea that because of the revolution people decided to make music is a commercial perspective. There were bands who decided to go along with that by making music related to the revolution. But I think most musicians, especially alternative and underground musicians, did not decide to make music because of the revolution.\"Sherbini and Hosny say Cairo's alternative arts scene has boomed in the past four years, but Sherbini doesn't like to call the electronic music movement an industry, because there is no supply and demand model. This is part of a global trend, gone are the days when artists made a living from record sales. Now earnings come from live performance, internet streaming and the sale of publishing rights. Egyptian artists are already used to getting their music out via websites like Soundcloud, so they are in a good position going forward, argues Sherbini.\"What we have now are the alternative music scenes: shaabi, hiphop, techno, deep house, a lot of things are happening in different music scenes in Egypt. People who are not signed to a label who produce their music at home - they don't have to use studios to produce their music. Ultimately they all have a chance to share it on the internet with people around the world for free,\" he says. \"And this is how things work abroad, we are not reinventing the wheel. We have an advantage here in Egypt. In other countries their music industries are collapsing. To be honest we don't really have a music industry. For all I know we are building a music scene from the ground up, it may or may not develop into a music industry but we don't have anything to lose.\"As fan bases for these alternative genres grow, entrepreneurs have reason to invest in new venues. The growth in alternative clubbing venues over the last four years has given Cairo's party-goers more choice of music, it's created new revenue streams for artists and it's given fans a real opportunity to become more than just a bedroom DJ. But many music venue owners are adverse to risk. New sounds don't guarantee paying crowds. Sherbini says there are only two venues in Cairo that will take risks: 100 Copies and Vent. Hosny agrees, and he says the type of music he makes is more accessible than mainstream styles and can inspire young fans to get involved.\"Another important thing that's changed since the older venues is the commercial interest that targets a specific social class or clique. Venues like Vent and 100 Copies are much cheaper than other music venues. Both spaces are very welcoming to all social classes and to all ages as well. They want music for everyone not just for one group of people, and this expands the music scene.\"Fady Garas is a graduate of Epic 101's music production course, adding electronic music production to his portfolio of Arabic opera singing, guitar and keyboard playing. He was keen to supplement his artist's income with potentially more stable earnings from sound engineering and music production. One year on, Garas now works part time at Epic 101 and even does some teaching on the music production course. But one of the most important things to come out of the six week programme, he says, is meeting a network of like-minded music producers. Garas says Epic 101 is not just teaching practical skills, it is actively creating a network and a culture. \"The idea of the course is that you meet a lot of people who play different genres of music, like electronic or rock. The course is not limited by genre or musical background or if you've studied music before. It creates a production platform where musicians can collaborate,\" he says. \"At the same time it creates awareness about live music production as opposed to DJ-ing. Music production needs more awareness in this country. Now with the help of this course we are changing the arts scene, it starts with spreading awareness,\" Garas adds. As the Arab Spring soundtrack fades, Cairo's electronic music scene is flourishing. But whether this develops into a thriving commercial industry remains to be seen. Artists chase revenue and clubbers crave choice, but both groups appreciate the magic of an artistic moment and hope commercialism can be kept at bay. Cairo - 10 April 2015++AUDIO AS INCOMING++1.
