Their one-year survival rate is over 90 percent, which is similar to outcomes in the United States.The beneficiaries of the transplant programme, which is partly funded by Venezuela's socialist government, come from poor families like the six-year-old Yin Carlos.Yin's father, Jean Carlos Fernandez, donated part of his liver to save his son's life.Having built a strong programme in such an adverse environment as Venezuela, Kato and Rivas-Vetencourt want to replicate their experience in other parts of Latin America where pediatric transplants are currently not available. Only around 150 children in Latin America and the Caribbean receive organ transplants each year compared to almost 500 in the US, according to the World Health Organization.The two doctors have created a foundation, FundaHigado America, to raise funds to train medical teams from around the region.
