Speaking at a news conference in Geneva, the WHO Director General highlighted the work that WHO teams are currently developing on the ground but said many countries facing Zika outbreaks are not fully prepared to deal with the simple diagnosis of the virus.As an example Chan highlighted the case of Cape Verde, a former Portuguese colony in the Atlantic Ocean with strong links to  Brazil. According to the Director General an extra four million dollars in funding is being discussed and expected to be cleared to support WHO work on the ground.Last month, WHO declared the spread of Zika in the Americas to be a global emergency, due to its link in ther spike in the number of babies born with abnormally small heads and the rise in a rare neurological syndrome that can cause paralysis and death.
