At London's Ideal Home Show, eco-friendly creations, free-flowing gardens and smart massage chairs are taking the work out of housework.STORY-LINE: It's called 'The Arc'. And while it can't float, this energy efficient home is built with the Earth in mind.On show at London's Ideal Home Show, an annual home design event, the Arc is constructed using individual road-transportable modules which can be designed or configured into various arrangements. It's created by Green Unit, a UK-based company which specialises in eco modular buildings. Each module is hand-crafted and made from natural, low environmental impact building materials.Fitted with triple-glazed windows and fabric-insulated walls, the Arc retains heat from human activity and requires little so-called 'top-up' heating. This, says project manager, David Richards, helps residents make significant savings on their gas and electricity bills.\"We've built a totally green unit, the idea is that we have a cedar roof where we have water that goes onto the roof comes down into the pot, keeps everything alive and well,\" he says.\"We have the very latest in technology inside and the idea of the project today is that we're all conscious about how much our energy bills cost and the beauty of this particular unit is that it actually gives you money back.\"The Arc's interior has been furnished by Danish designers BoConcept, showcasing a palette of grey, white, green, plus hints of caramel.Richards says smart, space-saving techniques have been used to accommodate the furniture, including beds, sofas and tables.\"We've tried to be very clever with the curvature of the building and that's actually to create some of the furniture, the beds, that literally go straight into the walls so there's no loss of space at all,\" says Richards.\"It's an interesting format inside, it's very new, it's never been used before, and the response we've had so far is incredibly exciting.\"Celebrating its 50th anniversary, British kitchen, bathroom and bedroom designer Betta Living is showcasing this 60s-themed kitchen, while accommodating modern technology and on-trend colours.According to marketing director, Barry Rourke, coppers and other metallics are fashionable this year, while accommodating modern technology, such as electric induction hobs.Simple, but useful, technology is incorporated into 'shaker style' kitchens.\"We've noticed that metallics - coppers - are coming into fashion again and bring those together with modern technology - so induction hobs are still hugely popular and, as I say, the metallics seem to be coming into dominance really with a lot of kitchens we're doing,\" says Rourke. The Ideal Home Show is playing host to a competition which sees six of the UK's leading horticultural colleges go head-to-head.Capel Manor College from north London is showcasing this 'Wellbeing Yoga Retreat' garden, featuring lush planting, secluded elements and striking features. There's a raised platform for pulling 'sun salutes' and 'downward dogs', plus medicinal plants.According to senior gardener and horticultural lecturer, Tom Wheatcroft, dense planting with lush leaves is on-trend this year.\"As ever, rich planting. I think this year more than ever a more naturalistic style of planting,\" he says.\"But, it's the plants that make the garden, so often neglected in garden design. Big, bold, rich planting I think.\"Wheatcroft says brightly-coloured flowers aren't needed to create a tropical setting, these evergreen foliage plants with muted rusty tones complement the rusty corten steel.\"You don't need to rely upon flower colour to give you a vibrant planting scheme,\" he says.\"You can use different textures of foliage and the architectural statement of some of your plants.\"After some back-breaking work in the garden, spending some time in one of these Inada massage chairs may be just the answer.Inada's smart creation uses infrared technology to scan the body, detect pressure points, then deliver a customised massage. It's intended to replicate the experience given by shiatsu massage therapists, delivering a traditional Japanese acupressure treatment. The chair is equipped with so-called 'boomerangs' which have four rollers. They're used to replicate kneading and tapping massage techniques.\"In the age that we live in, where we're stressed, we drive a lot, we stand a lot, we work on IT, our backs tend to get the brunt of it,\" says Hassan Gemei, an ambassador for Inada.\"The chair is designed to actually optimise your back, your circulation, your lymphatic system, your stress levels on a daily basis.\"Sales consultant and Ideal Home Show attendee, Sharon Worby, is enjoying her time in the chair.\"It feels fantastic, it's very relaxing,\" she says.\"I think I've got an air massage right now, so my feet are being massaged I think it's really, really good.
