Her destination: the Bolshoi ballet academy. STORY-LINEMany little girls dream of dancing for the Bolshoi. For 15-year-old Harper Ortlieb, that dream has come true. Harper is an American who left her small town in Oregon to move to Moscow to follow her dream of becoming a prima ballerina. She knew her teachers would be tough and that it would be a challenge to be so far away from home, but it has been even harder than she expected.\"I'm very honoured and humbled to have been accepted here. I have learnt so much just in the couple of months I have been here. It's been very difficult, but with that comes strength and with that I improve. And I feel like I came here to get better,\" she says. The prestigious academy has 84 foreigners among its 721 students, but few are accepted when they are as young as Harper and few are integrated into the regular Russian programme. The Bolshoi took notice of Harper during a summer programme it held in Connecticut and offered her a place in the Moscow academy. Harper's teacher Tatyana Galtseva believes she has what it takes to be a classical ballerina, possessing not just the necessary physical and aesthetic qualities but the will to learn.\"She is a very gifted girl. She is all ballet, all inspiration,\" Galtseva says. \"When children are talented, regardless of their nationality, they are alike in some way in how they approach what they do.\"A total of 17 Americans study at the Bolshoi academy, outnumbered only by the 28 students from Japan, with the rest of the foreigners coming from 22 other countries. Some of the foreign students took part in the spring concert on Thursday evening, and Harper was among the few girls from her class chosen for two of the dances.\"I get to perform today the same piece I did my first time I was here. So I have to remember the things I needed to work on the first time. And I'm nervous,\" Harper says. The constant criticism and corrections that come with dancing ballet at such a high level are mentally challenging, she says. \"My classmates and I, we come to the barre. There's corrections every single day. Point your foot harder, turn out more ... and we are going to get that for the rest of our life, even when we are professional,\" she says. \"You know preparing for this dance, there have been many rehearsals where I come home and I'm like, 'I don't know if I can do this', you know mentally it's difficult because everyday you are being told that things aren't right. But you know that every day you get better too with that. Every correction you learn more.\" Harper started ballet at a local dance school when she was three years old. When she turned 11, she was accepted to the School of Oregon Ballet Theatre in Portland, a three-hour roundtrip journey that she and her mother made six days a week.If Harper wants to be one of those rare foreigners to receive a diploma from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy, she has three more difficult years ahead. But now she has her mother back by her side.Harper's mother, Layne Baumann, made two trips to Moscow after she and her husband, Tim Ortlieb, dropped off their only child in September. In February, Baumann decided to move to Moscow at least for the rest of the school year, and she now rents an apartment two blocks from the academy. At the end of each day, Baumann talks to her daughter about what she learned in class and logs onto Skype so Harper's father can join the conversation from their home in Mount Hood, Oregon, 11 time zones away.LEAD IN: It's a long way from Oregon to Moscow, but for one 15-year-old ballet dancer it's a journey full of self-discipline and challenges - both mental and physical.
