Sharshembiyev Esenbulat, started learning to hunt with eagles when he was a teenager. \"I've been doing it since I was 13 years old, my ancestors are also hunters. Now, if God wills, the young generation will continue. We came here today to check out our golden eagles, if God wills, everything will go well. We also going to release the wolf today.\"Esenbulat hopes events like this will encourage younger generations to continue old traditions.The president of the Salburun Federation, Almazbek Akunov, says participants at the festival show off their hunting skills in the form of a sport. \"It's a sport, kind of an imitation of a hunt with fighting birds, archery and a hunt with Kyrgyz taigans (dogs),\" explains the \"For ten years we've been working on a policy directive and finally gave this sport a national status. It became possible today because it (the sport) is the cultural heritage of the Kyrgyz nation.\"The hunter takes the bird and begins training when it is a young nestling. When it grows up, the bird remains faithful to its owner and even recognises his voice.According to the rules of the festival, the golden eagle must attack and hit the prey - a dead fox's body dragged on a rope - on the first attempt and a living wolf on the second.Another old tradition is hunting with Taigan hounds, also known as Kyrgyz Borzoi hounds - the original Kyrgyz hound breed. According to legend, hunters found the first taigan hound in a vulture's nest.Kyrgyz tradition states the hounds cannot be bought or sold, only given as a present, because local legend says that God himself gave the dogs to the Kyrgyz people.An old saying says a family given a taigan hound will never be hungry again.\"I'm visiting from Germany and I have been surprised by how hospitable it all is here, and I have had a very, very interesting experience here today,\" says German tourist, Willi Heigl.The event's climax is not for the fainthearted.A wolf is released and runs for its life, while an eagle races in hot pursuit.The wolf has its snout tied to stop it turning on the bird.
