This was very important. I went to vote with my husband, family and friends. We were a group of young people. And this had a positive effect,\" says Sahar Javid, a Tehran resident. \"It showed that it is not just the demands of a particular group that matters. It is what the people and the youth want that matters most. It is us who will build the future of this country.\"This cafe is a popular meeting point for young Tehranis.As they drink their coffees and chat together, they hope the newly-elected politicians will work to improve their job prospects.\"The employment situation is very bad. Incomes are very low. I have to work 10 to 11 hours a day to make ends meet. We hope that the (new) parliament can help, because unemployment is terribly high,\" says one cafe customer.Iran's unemployment rate was 10.7 percent last month - and that figure rises to 26.5 percent for 20 to 24-year-olds, according to government statistics.The nuclear deal may open up global trade opportunities, but this customer is cautious on relying on other countries to tackle the problem.\"If they (the government) can raise employment through domestic production it would be much better than doing it through ties with other countries because our ties with other countries might become limited yet again, for any reason,\" she says.But not everyone is thinking about the economy.Some young people want to see a focus on culture.\"We needed a parliament that could go in the same direction as the government, and ensure more freedom for artists in all fields: in cinema, poetry, theatre, or whatever,\" says Ehsan Bayegi, who is involved in the local arts scene.Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has been Iran's top decision-maker since 1989, remains deeply suspicious of the West and has warned that too much openness to Western influence could dilute the country's Islamic values.\"What I want more than anything is peace, a feeling of calm, a feeling of welfare. And this is what we unfortunately lack sometimes,\" says Omid Roozbeh, Tehran resident.The vote isn't expected to herald large-scale change in Iranian policies, but may make it easier for President Hassan Rouhani to deliver in areas such as promoting social freedoms and reforming the economy.
