And the fact that his subject matter being kids in disadvantaged backgrounds, in a way - unfortunately in society we would say that because they are socially excluded their societies throw away kids. So he's sort of given them a space where they are of value as the work is valuable and they're playful as well. So, for me it was an invitation to look at them.\"14. Pan right of various artworks by ButheleziLEADIN:They're worthless pieces of trash to many, but one South African artist uses discarded bits of plastic to create unique works of art.The individual pieces are now sought-after by collectors and acclaimed by the country's art experts.STORYLINE:Hard at work in this Johannesburg studio, South African artist Mbongeni Buthelezi is busy making something from nothing.Discarded pieces of plastic - including bags and drinks wrappers - are this artist's medium.  With it, he crafts these unique, colourful portraits.The plastic bubbles and pops under Buthelezi's fingertips, which are calloused from manipulating the hot, molten material he uses to create these large-scale abstract pieces.The 49-year-old artist began working with plastic in his final year at art school while looking for a distinctive medium and one that a poor student could afford. He says he chose to create artworks using discarded plastic to catch attention and stand out from the crowd.\"With water colour and all other mediums or media that I have experimented with in the past, there was a time where I felt that I'm hitting the ceiling, I'm not growing anymore,\" he says.\"Everyone who is calling himself or herself an artist is experimenting with the same materials and it's all traditional way of making art. And for me I wanted to be different, I wanted to be noticed and I wanted to catch attention, because I knew also that I'm moving into a career where you have to be really special to be able to even make a living out of it.\"Buthelezi says he eventually found inspiration from a heap of plastic wrappers and a forgotten heat gun in his school's shed.That began a career in art which has now lasted 23 years.His work has been shown in Germany, the UK, the US and Australia, not to mention far and wide across his native South Africa.Now, Buthelezi feels he's proved the doubters wrong and is ready to take this unique style into uncharted waters.\"I also wanted to show everybody who dared to listen to me to say; 'Look, I'm not moving from this,' Much as people were saying; 'You can draw well, you can paint well,' but I wanted to introduce myself as someone who specialises with plastic,\" he says.\"I didn't know the future, I didn't know where this thing was going to land me, but I just said; 'Whatever happens in future, I'll just die with this,' and 23 years later I think know I can do anything that I want to do with this medium.\" In one work, the artist uses purple and orange soft drink wrappers to create the clothes of women chatting on a street corner.
