Close up, exterior of Pontetti inside the greenhouse, taking a breakLEAD-IN:An aerospace engineer is growing 50 foot (15.24 metre) high tomato vines with little water and no soil. The Italian engineer uses hydroponic farming which she says is the future of sustainable agriculture. STORYLINE: Walls of strawberries, lettuce and peppers that ripen with little water, and without ever touching the ground. This is the future of agriculture according to many in the farming industry. It's called hydroponic farming, and proof that it's catching on was everywhere at this year's universal EXPO on food in Milan. Now an aerospace engineer is proving to be light-years ahead in the field. Giorgia Pontetti is an engineer turned farmer. Her hydroponic greenhouse at Ferrari Farm in Rieti, central Italy is one-of-a-kind in Europe. Pontetti always suits up before entering her greenhouse. Hers is an artificial utopia. Crops grow inside a controlled environment that ignores the weather and the seasons.\"We think the future is hydroponic cultivation because unfortunately our planet is ever more ill, our climate is changing. Even in a Mediterranean area like this one we see rainfalls that are disproportionate to the climate zone,\" she says.\"And also, population density is rising. So we think that vertical farming that develops cultivation vertically on skyscrapers or buildings by using hydroponic systems like this, we think that's the future of our planet.\"Hydroponic gardens grow with no soil, about 70 percent less water and can develop in a lot less space. Pontetti's greenhouse fits 210 San Marzano tomato plants in 100 square metres (1076 square feet). According to the San Marzano Tomato Consortium a traditional field would require the same amount of land space to grow 200 plants. But plants from this variety grown with traditional methods reach about 1.5 metres (5 feet) in height whereas those in this hydroponic greenhouse grow to 3 metres (10 feet) - in effect doubling the yield from the same amount of land. Each tomato vine is rooted in a spongy mineral compound made of basalt. The vines hover over a special floor, dotted with precise holes that allow even ventilation. A hydraulic system pumps nutrient-laden water periodically, in different quantities during the day. In this sterile environment, encased in glass walls that protect the plants from excessive radiation, no pesticides are needed. Plants simply grow to their potential. These sixty-five-foot-long vines yield about a ton of tomatoes year-round. This basil stretches three feet (91 centimetres)high. The Ferrari Farm greenhouse runs on autopilot. A computer programmed by Pontetti, manages temperature and humidity, and monitors solar radiation, CO2 and PH - the acidity in water. Pontetti gives the San Marzano San tomatoes six different temperatures throughout the day. This variety is known for its vulnerability to pests and is disappearing because of it. Her computer keeps her man-made, Garden of Eden, running smoothly. If something goes awry, an alarm goes off.\"We think that with this technology and state-of-the-art greenhouses like ours, you can cultivate from the north pole to the equator, in whichever area of the planet and why not? In the future on missions of colonisation of other planets. I am an aerospace engineer and one of our greenhouses is an example that demonstrates that you can grow without the sun, so maybe in the future we'll think of going to Mars and growing our own lettuce,\" she says. Her hopes aren't so far fetched. Ferrari Farm is part of an international group called IBIS (Italian Bioregenerative Systems), coordinated by the Italian Space Agency. IBIS works on creating close-cycle eco-systems. The idea is, with enough water, plants and humans can feed off of one other - exchanging oxygen and food, for natural fertiliser. These artificial habitats are called bio-regenerative life support systems (BRLSS). They are seen by scientists as a premise for human colonies in space.====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
