The annual international competition - now in its 19th year - is a global gathering of robotic whizz-kids and industry leaders.STORYLINE:RoboCup 2015 is hotting up in Hefei, a city in eastern China's Anhui province.In the Robot Rescue League events, teams compete by putting their robotic creations through an elaborate maze, dotted with different terrains and obstacles, as they search for survivors in a simulated rescue operation.Sakol Nakdhamabhorn, team leader of BART LAB from Thailand's Mahidol University, explains the intricate technology required for a robot to be successful in such a challenge.\"This is the manipulator and at the end of it we attached the sensor system which are the high definition camera and then also have the carbon dioxide sensor, and then heat sensor and also have a light,\" he says.\"And we installed a speaker also, so the operator can talk to the victim inside the arena and also the operator can hear the sound of the victim back through the microphone.\"Nakdhamabhorn's team is one of three to make it into the finals, he says the atmosphere can get pretty competitive.Adam Jacoff, from the United States' National Institute of Standards and Technology, was one of the masterminds behind developing the courses used in today's competition. \"We set it up in this maze-like configuration. So robots are traversing standard mobility obstacles, very difficult terrains, while trying to identify victims for example,\" he says. \"The points are either in the victims or in certain tasks The simulated victims are small boxes with visual form, like baby dolls, literally. Thermal signatures - heating pads - Visual acuity tests, like hazmat labels hazardous material labels or literally eye charts.\"Each robot gets 20 minutes - or 30 in the final - to make it through the course and detect as many victims as possible. They use an array of HD cameras, heat sensors, microphones and carbon dioxide sensors to pin-point where there may be someone in need of help. \"You need to be right,\" says Jacoff. \"You need to be right with the robot because as soon as that robot triggers on an actual victim, the response crews are coming in after that. That's risking real life, going after unknown locations - and there better be signs of life there.\"Each team may have more than one robot, usually they come armed with a remotely-operated unit as well as an autonomous unit - something the robotics community is keen to develop more in the future. But, malfunctions are more common than with the remotely-operated units and speed is still a big problem - it's not uncommon for the self-driving units to simply stop, or start continually moving round in circles.Dr Farshid Najafi, team leader of Iran's Qazvid Islamic Azad University MRL Robot Rescue - another finalist - explains what's needed for the smaller autonomous robots in rescue scenarios.\"So what we have here basically is an autonomous rescue robot. Chen Xiaoping, General Chair of RoboCup 2015, says the annual event is one of the most important in the robotic community's calender.\"In the competition, different teams from different universities in different countries (come) to compete on the same environment, on the same fields and the same rules to show their technology progress and various robotic techniques.\"The first RoboCup was held in 1997 in Nagoya, Japan. This is the second time China has hosted the annual gathering.
