But one enterprising woman has taken on a trade dominated by men.She makes knives and over the years has earned enough to get her children through school. STORYLINE:Working without gloves or eye protection, care is needed to safely craft this blunt piece of metal into a sharp instrument. But Amal Ahmed has been doing this for years. The 51-year-old mother of two works out of her brother's workshop in the Cairo neighbourhood of Al Madbah (The Slaughterhouses).The knife maker and sharpener is following in her father's footsteps. As a child, Ahmed was always fascinated by her father's trade and used to help him and her brothers. At first, they gave her small tasks like preparing the equipment and breaking coal for the fire. \"I started this job when I was seven, I used to come with my father, I used to break coal for my brother and that's how I learned the trade,\" she says.Now, Ahmed is making knives from scratch.After getting a divorce in her late 20s, she chose to prove herself in a male-dominated world, in order to feed her children.\"I had to work for the sake of my children, I wanted to raise them. I got divorced when my daughter was two-years-old and my son was five, so what do you think I had to do?  Working was the best option, wasn't it?\"For years, Ahmed put in the hard work so she could provide for her children and she believes that she has been successful in doing so.\"I used to come here to my brother's shop and work for 20 (Egyptian) pounds per day (currently 2.55 US dollars) and go buy my children food on my way home. I raised them well and now my daughter is a student at Cairo university,\" she explains. Now she earns an average of 20 - 25 Egyptian pounds (2.55 - 3.19 US dollars) a day. But her choice of work continues to raise eyebrows because usually only men work in the industry. \"The people who live in my neighbourhood think that it is normal because I grew up within this community. But people from other neighbourhoods are astonished, 'how is a woman making cleavers and knives' and so on?\"Ahmed wishes that the government would help her to open her own workshop and that her son would join her in her trade.\"I want to have my own small project and my unemployed son would work with me,\" she says. At the end of a long day at the grindstone, Ahmed has a chance to relax and eat some fruit. But her skill and ambition will drive her back to the workshop tomorrow, crafting another blade that will find a place in an Egyptian kitchen.
