Wide Palestinian Museum's entrance hall under construction and hills seen in backgroundLEAD-IN:Ahead of the opening of a state-of-the-art museum next year, researchers from the Palestinian Museum are busy harvesting memories to record for posterity. The \"Family Album Project\" project is particularly important for Palestinians, many of whom are displaced from their ancestral lands, often with only family photographs and mementos to maintain their sense of who they are as a people.STORYLINE:Nadia Mikhail brings two more framed photos to her dining table which is already covered in family mementos, as researchers from the Palestinian Museum look on.There's a coloured picture of Mikhail, a retired piano teacher and founder of the Palestinian National Conservatory of Music, flanked by her young sons. And another in black and white depicting a very young Mikhail with her sister, Palestinian politician Hanan Ashrawi; the two girls are posing together with their cousin, their hair adorned with outsized ribbons and bows. Spread over the table at Mikhail's Ramallah home in the West Bank are photos spanning the past 80 years, from graduation pictures to wedding photos. One records the wedding day of Mikhail's in-laws, the Abboushi family. Mikhail lovingly describes the couple as \"very handsome.\" The researchers look at the pictures and select some which they'll later digitise and add to the Palestinian Museum's \"Family Album Project\" collection. The idea is to document Palestinian history through family photos and memories that will be made accessible via the Palestinian Museum website. So far researchers have been busy gathering photos from Palestinians in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, but they aim to eventually include those living in Gaza and the Palestinian diaspora. Palestinian Museum researcher, Natalie al-Masri, defines the photos as \"treasures\". \"With the 'Family Album Project' we at the Palestinian Museum are collecting Palestinian photos, photos that I call the treasures of Palestinian homes. Every time we go to a home we find a new treasure and, as you can see, we classify pictures by the year or by events. Our work is to find something that can benefit new generations of Palestinians. This is an effort to document and an effort to educate,\" al-Masri explains. Mikhail is delighted that the project is documenting Palestinian history.\"This is especially important at this stage because we're suffering from an attempt to erase the Palestinians' collective memory, our history, our geography and borders,\" she says. The Palestinian Museum itself is not yet open. Its construction is under way in Birzeit, near Ramallah, and is due to open in May next year, and the \"Family Album Project\" is is a work in progress ahead of the Museum's official opening. Nestled on a grassy hill near Birzeit University, the structure of the Palestinian Museum building is starting to take shape. The exhibition gallery, cafeteria and amphitheatre are among the sections nearly complete, as the construction team works hard to finish the project. The official opening of what will be the West Bank's largest museum devoted to Palestinian history is set for 15 May 2016, says Rana Anani, the Palestinian Museum's Communication and Media Manager. \"The Museum will open on the 15th of May 2016 on the commemoration of the 'nakba'. It will be the 68th Nakba Day. The memory of the 'nakba' is very important in the work of the Museum; it's at the core of its mission because the Museum will cover the last 200 years of Palestinian history and the biggest event that happened is the 'nakba'. It changed the path and history of the Palestinian people,\" Anani explains, referring to what the Palestinians call the Day of the Catastrophe, which marks the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948.The privately funded museum, which has government support, is the biggest such project the Palestinians have undertaken in terms of scale, space and budget. It is being overseen by the Welfare Association, a Palestinian aid and development group supported by philanthropists that has close ties to the governing Palestinian Authority. The building, which enjoys views of rocky hills, pines and olive groves, has been built according to ecological standards, says Sohaib Hasiba, a civil engineer who's part of the construction team. The museum will draw attention to the conflicting narratives at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. For Jews, the establishment of Israel reinforced the homecoming of an exiled people with ties to the Holy Land going back thousands of years. But for Palestinians, the \"nakba\", or catastrophe, meant the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who either fled or were driven from their homes. Israel has dozens of museums with vast collections of biblical texts and artifacts connecting the Jewish people to the Holy Land. The Palestinians meanwhile have about 30 museums in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, the areas where they hope to establish a state, but nothing on the scale of the new project. The museum will focus on the past 200 years, from the Turkish-based Ottoman Empire through the British mandate over Palestine and up to the current day. As well as such defining moments as Israel's creation in 1948 and the subsequent upheaval and displacement of Palestinians, it will also look at the history of Palestinians abroad, as well as their living conditions in the Gaza Strip, West Bank and east Jerusalem - under Jordanian and Israeli control, and the last 20 years of partial self-rule. The organisers hope the museum will lead to partnerships in other territories where Palestinians live across the world. ===========================================================Clients are reminded:
