Wide of International Space Station over Earth as astronauts begin spacewalk30. Close of astronaut attaching cables to space stationLEADIN A device on earth has been moved for the first time by an astronaut in space. The ground-breaking experiment took place on June 3, led by a team at the European Space Agency. STORYLINE : A man grabs a joystick in a lab in Noordwijk in the Netherlands. Then another man grabs a joystick on the International Space Station, he can feel the force with which the joystick on earth moves. The joystick in the lab in Noordwijk now moves independently, controlled from space, prompting a thumbs up from Dr. Andre Schiele. Astronaut Terry Virts is the first person to control an object on earth from space. Virts could also feel the force and movement of a person on the ground who moved the joystick on earth. This is a good day for Schiele's team at the telerobotics laboratory, ESA Noordwijk, their experiment will help pave the way for the use of haptic robots in space. Haptic refers to devices that convey the sense of touch.\" I am feeling very happy and I think that for space robotics this is a very good, a first point to actually to reach down from space to ground and actually be able to touch systems on earth from space, and this is unique and will lead the new way to space robotics in the future, when humans can truly present their presence to planetary surfaces where they can not go.\" says Schiele. This \"space handshake\" is a part of project called the Haptics-2, testing systems to transmit the human sense of touch to (and from) space for advanced robot control. It took about 90 minutes to set up and fix communication protocols of this unique orbital session and the \"space handshake\" lasted just three minutes. This simple experiment actually required very sophisticated control software. The communication signal between the International space station Columbus and the European Space Agency's centre in the Netherlands was transmitted via satellites some 36,000 kilometres (22, 369 miles) over the equator, as well as through NASA's ground system. Users on both ends of communication experienced a delay of 0.8 seconds. Thomas Krueger, an expert on real time communication software says the technology can have applications on earth as well.\"Potential opportunities with this technology is a really great. Think off other events on earth like Fukushima (nuclear plant disaster) or underwater operations. Basically this technology of remotely controlling robot can be applied not just on space but also on earth, \" he explains. Robots would be first explorers of distant planets, remotely controlled by humans. ESA's telerobotics Laboratory created Interact Centaur, a space rover with attached robotic flexible arms that could do complex tasks in space conditions, like a pin insertion. The ability for the human controllers to feel the forces which the robot is experiencing, haptics, is crucial for such delicate tasks explains Schiele. \"This task involves multiple degrees of freedom and generate forces between robot and his environment, so it is very essential to actually to receive that force feed back back in the space station and astronauts will be able to exactly feel what they are doing without breaking the system allowing them to do assembly tasks, packing hole task or operate knobs and doors and exchange technical facilities what you can see here\".In the future an exoskeleton arm worn by the human controller could manipulate a robotic arm elsewhere as demonstrated by a member of the telerobotics team. Any motion of the arm will be reflected to a robotic arm and forces that robot can experience can be reflected back to the operator, enabling him to do intuitive operations in real time, in distant locations.\"And when Jan moves his arm any motion of the arm will be reflected to a robotic arm and forces that are experience by that robot could be reflected back to the operator and therefore we actually step into robotic arm if you want to do really intuitive operations, remote controlled in any location away within seconds of light speed distance. That brings you to robotic systems either in orbit or another part of the globe or if you are in orbit on earth or other planet like Mars.\" says Schiele. ESA Telerobotics Laboratory is planning its next experiment in September, when astronauts will be using robotic systems and force feed back technology from space station to earth to complete more complex tasks like screwing and insertion.====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
