The aim is to balance caring for ageing parents while respecting their independence.  STORYLINE: Each time 81-year-old Bill Dworsky or his 80-year-old wife Dorothy from San Francisco, California, lift the lid on a pill container, open  the refrigerator or oven or close the bathroom door, tiny sensors in their San Francisco home make notes on a digital logbook.The motion-sensor system installed in their home is designed to help adult children keep an eye on their aging parents from a distance and notify them when there's a break in routine or emergency.The couple's 53-year-old son, Phil, checks their movements on his smartphone. If there's no activity during a designated time, the younger Dworsky gets an automated email, so he can decide whether to call or stop by. \"My parents, they're fiercely independent. There will be a point at which they really do need more direct care, but for now we're trying to find a way to help them, for as long as they can, be on their own,\" he says. The Silicon Valley tech executive lives just across town, but the sensors help him keep an eye on his ageing parents while also raising a teenage daughter and frequently travelling for work. While his parents don't need a lot of assistance, they have stopped driving and his father uses a cane.A set of motion sensors from San Francisco-based startup, Lively seemed right for the Dworskys. Before hearing about Lively, Phil had raised the idea of a webcam, but his parents refused saying it would be a violation of their privacy.The Dworsky's have lost some privacy with the tracking system, but the sensors help them stay independent and remain in their own home.\"We don't want to be in a home for the elderly, because we don't feel like we are elderly - even though we are,\" says Dorothy Dworsky.The systems are a new twist on the notion of personal alarms, such as the Life Alert system that gained popularity with \"Help, I've fallen and can't get up\" advertisements in the U.S.They often use simple, inexpensive components such as accelerometers that know when an object is moved. Others use small power sensors to track electricity use or contact circuits that tell when a door is open or closed. \"It gives people peace of mind and assurance that mom's doing okay - without being too invasive. There are no video cameras or anything of that nature,\" says David Glickman, Lively's co-founder and chief operating officer. Companies like Lively, Evermind and BeClose charge $50 to $300 for a set of sensors and $30 to $70 a month for wireless monitoring. Each promises to safeguard clients' personal information.The Institute on Ageing in San Francisco has been helping entrepreneurs test products like Lively to understand how technology can and can't help the elderly.Programme Director, Kristina Lugo says the system proved particularly useful with helping one of their clients who suffers from dementia. \"It helped us track his behaviours. We found out he was going out at 1 o'clock, 2 o'clock, 3 o'clock in the morning. It let us know when he didn't have his medications on time or at all. So we were able to follow up with different services to make sure all of his needs were being met,\" she says. But the programme manager, Daniel Lin warns that tracking should not be used to replace vital human interaction.  \"It doesn't replace the contact that you have with the client. It can't replace the fact that you take them out to dinner or take them out for lunch. It only provides you with data points of what they're doing.\"Electronic tracking does raise issues around dignity and privacy, says Dr. Christine Ritchie, a geriatrics professor at the University of California, San Francisco. \"I think sensors have great potential in allowing older adults stay independent and at home for longer periods of time, but there are challenges with these sensors.\"Ritchie believes some concerns will diminish as more people get used to using fitness bands, \"smart\" thermostats and other gadgets that track their daily lives, though.
