Wide of Ono posing for photographers and giving peace signLEADIN:Yoko Ono has attended a preview of her brand new one-woman exhibition at New York City's Museum of Modern Art.Nearly 45 years after she staged a fake exhibit at the famous art venue, the museum is now honouring Ono the artist.STORYLINE:In 1971, Yoko Ono created a fake show for herself at MoMA, even going so far as to create a catalogue of work. For that exhibition, she supposedly released flies on the museum grounds, visitors were invited to track them as they buzzed through Manhattan. But it was all a stunt.Now - almost 45 years later - she's attending a preview of a fully-fledged one-woman exhibit at the New York City art venue.Ono says she was surprised when the museum first approached her about the possibility of a show in 2008.That's because she wasn't sure whether the museum remembered the first 'conceptual' exhibition she staged.\"Most people didn't know about this, what I was doing (in 1971) for say roughly 40 years, or more actually,\" says Ono.\"And I don't know how I did it really, 40 years of not being recognised and just doing it. In short order, Lennon divorced his wife, married Ono and in 1970 left The Beatles. Lennon and Ono collaborated on everything together: bed-ins, avant-garde films, music and finally a son, Sean, born in 1975.Married on 20 March 1969, Lennon and Ono spent their week-long honeymoon in an Amsterdam hotel bed to protest world violence. Two months later they staged another bed-in protest in a Montreal hotel.On 8 December 1980, Lennon was shot and killed by a fan, Mark David Chapman, outside a New York City apartment.The slaying produced a worldwide outpouring of grief. Tens of thousands of people gathered in New York City's Central Park for a ceremony that culminated in 10 minutes of silence.According to MoMA curator Christophe Cherix, Ono's fame as the wife of late Beatle John Lennon has long overshadowed her work as an artist. \"When she met John Lennon in London, she had behind her ten years as an artist and ten very important years where she basically redefines the art of her time,\" he says.\"Her fame clearly overshadowed that moment so it was time for us as a museum to bring that back.\"This new exhibition focuses on work created by Ono between 1960 and 1971.But it doesn't ignore the late Beatle's influence on her work, several pieces feature John Lennon as the main subject.\"We were together and there was no kind of line, no division there,\" says Ono.\"And I would think of something and we'll do it this way or something - he immediately answered it.
