Children playing football; damaged houses in background STORYLINEAid trucks driving on dirt roads reached Balua village, near the epicentre of Nepal's earthquake on Thursday, five days after the quake struck. Sukhmaya Tamang, 60, trekked about 20 miles (32 kilometres) across Nepal's quake-wracked mountains, waiting two days in Balua, before the aid arrived. She and hundreds of other villagers - many elderly and all of them poor - have arrived in recent days at this village north west of Kathmandu, beyond which no vehicles can go. They have come in order to receive emergency shelter to replace their remote mountain homes that were destroyed or damaged by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that radiated from an epicentre almost directly below.\"Everything is difficult, (getting) food is difficult, water is difficult, oil, salt is difficult�food items. My house is destroyed. I have nothing, it is very difficult,\" said Tamang. In the next few weeks, emergency experts say it is crucial for the government and agencies to get food, medicine and shelter against unseasonal rains to some 1.4 million people who have lost everything in the worst-affected regions. They must rebuild collapsed latrines and clear dead animal carcasses to avoid a sanitation nightmare. And in the longer term, Nepal's vast farming community, comprising two-thirds of the country's 27 million population, will need help.The UN Food and Agricultural Organisation have said that the earthquake, and at least 73 aftershocks, could hamper efforts to harvest this year's wheat.
