Various of visitors looking at a yellow Mercedes AMG GT S sports carLEADIN:Carmakers have unveiled a range of new models and concept cars at the Shanghai auto show. Foreign and Chinese brands are vying for a slice of the largest auto market in the world. STORYLINE:It's a car lovers paradise in Shanghai. Dozens of vehicles are on display at the motor show - from luxury brands like Lamborghini and Ferrari to auto giants like Toyota, BMW and Ford. There were also plenty of new models from Chinese domestic brands like Haval.The Shanghai auto show has become an increasingly important event in the car industry's calendar since China overtook the US as the largest auto market in the world in 2009.However, the abrupt deceleration in China's economy has dragged down auto sales growth and prompted buyers to shift to lower-priced models.Growth slowed to 7 percent in the first three months of this year, its lowest quarterly expansion since the aftermath of the 2008 global crisis. That's still higher than the low single-digit growth forecast for the United States and Europe this year, but well below China's peak of 14.2 percent in 2007.Despite slowing growth, international car makers, including Ford, are increasing their investments in China to enhance their future market position.Ford also used the Shanghai show for the global debut of its latest Taurus.Ford says it is acquiring a Chinese auto factory to expand its capacity to produce Ford-branded passenger cars, beginning in the second half of next year.Ford's President and CEO, Mark Fields says: \"It's clear that the market is off the double-digit growth rate as we have been seen in the last couple of years, but still it is 7% which is the consensus growth of this year. So we think by bringing this contemporary design to China at this point in time, we will really appeal to the people who want to drive the car as well as those who want to be driven,\" he says.Vehicle sales in China reached 23.49 million last year, well ahead of the United States, according to China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).However, the slowdown in growth is shaking up the car market, according to China-based auto analyst, Yale Zhang.\"We do see some premium sectors are impacted a little bit. So, I think that is a sign of the economy issues.\"One area that has defied the trend is environmentally friendly new-energy cars. Sales rose in the first quarter of this year. Foreign car makers are now looking to capitalise on this potential market in China and many displayed their new-energy products to the auto show.BMW unveiled its newest X5 xDrive 40e, a plug-in hybrid version based on its popular SUV.\"We think new energy vehicles have a very very strong position for the future in this market place. That helped to boost the market share of Chinese automakers so far this year to 43 percent from last year's 38 percent, according to LMC Automotive.Great Wall debuted the H6 Coupe and showed the H8 SUV under its Haval brand. The popularity of Great Wall's SUVs have helped transform it into one of China's most successful auto brands. The company says it hopes to sell 10,000 units a month of both of its new vehicles.Analyst, Yale Zhang says: \"This two or three years they launched a lot of SUV models, overwhelming, basically a lot more than the overseas car makers.
