Various of Hawley playing the calliope LEADIN:The Natchez paddle-steamer celebrates its 40th anniversary today ( 13 April) and it still continues to carry tourists looking for a taste of the old South. The paddle-steamer is an image from the Mississippi River's history, but few of these old boats survive... let alone still sail the waters.STORYLINEToday is a special day for this old paddle-steamer.40 years ago the Natchez launched on its maiden voyage up the world famous Mississippi river.Ever since then it's been ferrying tourists along the waterway to the tune of its old calliope steam pipesIt's said you feel New Orleans in your bones when you hear the high-pitched whistle of this organ. One man who is probably more familiar to its tune than anybody else is Clarke 'Doc' Hawley, who was the first steamboat captain of the Natchez.\"As far as I know, it's the only sound that you can see. You can see it happening, and that's part of the fascination of having someone up here, making a sound that you can see coming out,\" he says. Its high-pitched sound carries for miles around, calling people from their homes behind the great levees all along the Mississippi... like the tunes played by modern ice cream vans.\"In the days before mass communication, a lot of these little river towns didn't have a weekly newspaper, let alone a daily newspaper, but when you played the calliope, everybody in town knew the boat was there. There was no doubt about it, and people came down and took a boat ride,\" explains Hawley. The Natchez is a lot younger than the original paddle steamers, an accurate replica built to mimic the best steamboats ever made. With its authentic 85-year-old steam engine, its wooden paddlewheel, and wedding-cake-like layered decks, the Natchez has given countless travelers and locals a unique chance to visit the Mississippi River and feel the river's great history, its pull and its force.\"The river was the Interstate of its day,\" says Hawley. \"So there were steamboats that carried people, steamboats that pushed barges, there were sawmill steamboats that went from farm to farm, plantation to plantation, sawing up wood Farmer Brown wants to build a new barn, he's got to go 40-50 miles to get to the closest sawmill, boat comes right to the front yard and grinds it. There were showboats that put on shows and melodramas before movies. There were gospel boats, believe it or not, that went from town to town, taking up collections.\"Hawley has since retired as a steamboat captain, passing the baton on to younger men.Donald Houghton gives orders on deck these days, as his hat confirms, he's the current captain of the Natchez.\"Well not many people can say they're a steamboat captain. A hundred years ago, a lot of people could say that, but these days, not many people can say that. But, it's just a one-of-a-kind thing, running a true steamboat in the Port of New Orleans with a busy harbour, showing people the Mississippi River, where the Battle of New Orleans was fought. The whole reason the city is here is because of the Mississippi River and steamboats,\" says Houghton.A good captain must know the river and all its tricks, from the bends, currents and unexpected eddys in the stream. The steamer today is a tourist attraction and many come for a lazy, laid-back cruise that harkens back to the old South.Inside the Natchez' stateroom passengers can enjoy the authentic sounds of a New Orleans jazz band... there's even room to dance if the mood strikes.Visitors can tour the old engine room to see how the machinery works.Today 79-year-old Hawley and the Natchez have become part of what it means to be in New Orleans. A ride on the Natchez, with a visit to its steam engine, is part of the pleasure of visiting New Orleans, along with the beignets and coffee.\"It's Americana. They have paddle wheels. It's something that people just enjoy seeing and hearing,\" says Hawley.\"It was a way of life, and it's still - amazingly - a way of life for people who live along the river.\"40 years old and still looking and sounding good... here's to another four decades of paddle steaming down one of America's most famous rivers.====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
