The Natchez was built to mimic the best steamboats ever made. With its authentic 85-year-old steam engine, its wooden paddlewheel, stateroom with a jazz band and wedding-cake-like layered decks, the Natchez has given countless travelers and locals a unique chance to visit the Mississippi River and feel the river's great history, its pull and its force. Celebrities too numerous to list have been given tours by the captain and staff. Among them: Tennessee Williams, Placido Domingo, Dick Van Dyke, Mohammed Ali, Dolly Parton, as well as U.S. presidents, Gerald Ford and both president Bushes, and royalty. Clarke \"Doc\" Hawley was there 40 years ago when the Natchez first launched on April 13, 1975. He was its first captain, a veteran calliope player and an expert of the Mississippi River and its bends, ports and ways. Today 79-year-old Hawley and the Natchez have become part of what it means to be in New Orleans. A ride on the Natchez, with a visit to its steam engine, is part of the pleasure of visiting New Orleans, along with the beignets and coffee. Of utmost importance to the lure of the Natchez is the calliope, a steam-powered piano that has a very high pitched sound. When the calliope plays, you feel New Orleans in your bones.
