WIde ground shot of passing patrol. LEADIN:Illegal loggers and animal trappers have destroyed large parts of Cambodia's primary rainforests over the last two decades. Now one family has moved into the middle of a threatened community forest to try to save what little remains. STORYLINE:Lightly armed with knifes and homemade air-rifles, local men from the Phnom Thot forest are on the trail of an elusive foe. They're looking for illegal loggers and animal trappers who are often armed with AK-47's and Chinese-made assault rifles. Affectionately known locally as \"the militia\", the men earn a few dollars a day patrolling a 64 square kilometre (24 square mile) area of protected forest. The military type planning is mostly concerned with how to escape quickly if a fight with the loggers actually breaks out.The head of the group is Ben Davis - originally from Oregon, USA - who pays for the patrols out of his own pocket. As well as a monthly salary, the men earn a US$70 bonus for every logger's chainsaw they seize as well as US$5 for every can of petrol.Today, after an extensive search, the team has had little success. \"Unfortunately we're not able to find any of it except this one 30 litre jug of gasoline. So there's probably six, ten, chainsaws also out there somewhere, but we don't know where they're at and the loggers are just hanging around watching us to see what we're going to do,\" says Davis. Ben and Sharyn Davis and their two home-schooled daughters Jarrah (6) and Amelie (10) live here in the heart of Phnom Thot forest in a two-bedroom wooden house made from fallen trees. It's completely isolated - the nearest village is two hours' drive over rough terrain, but the young family has plenty of company.Gibbons swing through the treetops while the family's domesticated birds have become mixed with wild birds who lurk at the edge of the forest. Inside the house a three year old orphaned gibbon named Molly rolls around on the floor with the family's pet dog. The Davis family has been in Cambodia since 1995. They moved into the jungle nine months ago with plans to establish an eco-tourism project, run by paid locals with tree houses, zip lines, a swimming pool and nature trails for visitors. But before they can focus on that, they are working on protecting what's left of the forest. Phnom Thot was until recently rich with wildlife including rare species like Sambar deer and Banteng - now hunted almost to extinction for food, as well as valuable trees including rosewood and other rare species, almost all of which have been cut down. Living in the middle of the jungle comes with its joys and challenges says Sharyn Davis, originally from Sydney, Australia.\"So we feel, every morning we kind of wake up, oh man we're lucky to be living here,\" she says. \"There are definitely challenges, waking up in the middle of the night when we hear a chainsaw Ben often has to get up and rouse the workers to go out on patrol and to find out what's happening, that's one of the biggest challenges,\" she says. Most of the illegal logging takes place at night when it's easier for the loggers to avoid law enforcement. This forces the men out on night patrol. The men listen for the distinctive sound of chainsaws in the distance while GPS is used to help navigate around the jungle in the dark.Great care must be taken. the forest is alive with lots of deadly snakes like this poisonous Malayan viper that tonight is about to serve as dinner to the patrolmen. A bite from a snake like this could mean the loss of a limb or even death out here so far from a hospital.Early next morning the patrol stumbles upon an illegal loggers' camp.No guns are found at the camp, but the patrol belives they are probably stashed close by. \"Their story is that they're out looking for turtles, hunting for turtles and they happened to come across this logging camp so they just slept here, pretty goodI could have thought of that,\" jokes Davis. The head of the group - seen here in the red cap - is an outsider who is well known to Davis for running local teams of loggers. With photographic or video evidence of trees actually being cut down Davis can contact the local police who will arrest the suspects for a fee. But in this case with no such evidence, there's little they can do but to let them go.The patrol believe that the loggers will just hang around until the coast is clear before retrieving their chainsaws and getting back to work. With species like Rosewood fetching many thousands of dollars per cubic metre, the temptation to log is strong for many poor people who have few other options. Patrolmen Po Ya says they do what they can, but they have to be careful too.\"If the organisation tells me to go there, I go there. For example to the west of the Thot Mountains, I go wherever they tell me to go, I'm not lying. I'll go wherever I have to and if I have a problem I'll call in support if I have a radio connection, two nights means two nights, three nights means three nights.\"Po Dan, a fighter in the Khmer Rouge from 1972-1980, says he's confident that the patrols will succeed eventually, if they keep up their efforts.\"I think in my heart that in the future our project will be successful. In my heart I believe that if we start now and just keep going whatever happens it will soon improve. The tourists will start coming little by little.\" \"The villagers think that the forest just goes forever,\" says Davis. \"But they don't realise that only 20 kilometers away there's another village cutting towards them and they're cutting in that direction and one day they meet in the middle and realise there's nothing left and they just didn't have any idea. And so our job is to help them to visualise what might happen if they don't start taking the issue seriously now.\" Forest covers 100,000 square kilometres (38,610 square miles) of Cambodia according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) - that's just over 57% of the country. FAO figures show that between 1990 and 2010 Cambodia lost 22.0% of its forest cover, or around 28,500 square kilometres (11,000 square miles). For now the patrols continue, and Davis vows they'll keep going for as long as there's anything left to protect.====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
