It's part of a scheme in Mexico which aims to empower those who are developmentally disabled and to give them the independence to join the workforce. STORYLINE:These students in Guadalajara, Mexico are learning how to make cookies.  They are being trained by the Damor Bakery which is part of the FAEE (Fundacion de Apoyo Para la Educacion Especial/ Special Education Support Foundation), a private foundation.Training fees depend on family income and many of the students have scholarships. The maximum tuition cost is $2,500 MXN a month ($161.30 USD)The students here are aged between 15 and 38 years old and all have learning difficulties. The majority have Downs Syndrome, and the aim of the bakery is to offer the students jobs as bakers once their training is complete - the length of training depends on each individual. Once they have completed their training they are assigned to specific chores in the bakery. \"We founded Damor bakery approximately 2 years ago, and our goal was to create a working centre for the guys that we take care of here and for their families,\" says Guadalupe Arreola, the founder of Damor bakery and director of FAEE. The students are taught to make bread as well as cakes. To work in the kitchen, the students must be of legal working age and able to follow orders. The shifts usually last no longer than 2 hours. The students do not operate the ovens.Alan Carrion has Downs Syndrome and has been attending school at the FAEE for many years, but his mother Maria Quintero says it wasn't until he started the bakery course at Damor that his confidence and everyday skills really started to improve.  He now has completed his training and is tasked with cutting cookies and kneading dough. \"He kneads, he washes the mills, he helps. He makes the cookies. He says: They make me do things too,\" she says. \"I love the kitchen. I wear an apron, a hat and a mask and I work inside there,\" says Carrion. Hector Figueroa is Secretary of the Jalisco State Council for Inclusion and Attention for People with Disabilities. He believes that feeling useful is especially important for the mentally disabled, because it empowers them and gives them the freedom to make choices about their own lives.  \"It's very important because then you feel part of a society as a person with disabilities. That's the importance you get when you have a job. You feel useful, productive and included in that society. This from a rights and obligations perspective,\" he says. \"You get a self esteem benefit because if you don't have a job, obviously you are tied to whatever your family can give you, you are tied to whatever someone else can or wants to do for you, when you have a job you decide\" he continues. None of the students has acquired independent employment yet, but that's the goal the project is working towards. \"This bakery is a very cool project. It's different. We stopped considering the disabled people as vulnerable groups or as groups that need to receive always. No.  What's important is that they can give and work. Not just sitting there waiting for the government or someone to do something for them,\" says Arreola.The products made at Damor are sold at local universities and cafeterias and the bakery hopes to expand this to other local businesses in the future.
