Wide of Volklingen Ironworks exteriorLEADIN:Once confined to dark street corners and derelict city walls, urban art is now coming in from the cold.At the third edition of the Urban Art Biennale in Germany, they're gathering street artists from around the world, displaying what organisers claim to be one of the most significant exhibitions of the art form.STORYLINE:Set amongst the Volklingen Ironworks in East Germany, urban art is finding a home.Between the iron girders, concrete walls and wooden floor boards of this 19th century factory, works by street artists from around the world are wowing visitors to the Urban Art Biennale.Now in its third edition, the European Centre of Art and Industry Culture is displaying the most important positions and contemporary developments of this young and thriving art form.Staged in the small city of Volklingen - not far from the German-French border - organisers claim the collection to be one of the most significant exhibitions of urban art in Europe.The historical roots of urban art lie in the graffiti art of the 20th century. Pieces by young up-and-coming urban artists are taking their rightful place next to works by street art superstars.Young artists in demand include Thomas Canto and 'LX.One' from France, and 'Okuda' from Spain.According to exhibition curator Meinrad Maria Grewenig, they've gathered artists from almost every corner of the globe.\"With the third Urban Art Biennale here at the World Cultural Heritage Site Volklingen Ironworks, we are having an overview of the scene of the - as we think - most important art of the 21st century, Urban Art, in the world,\" he says. \"We are having 81 artists from 23 countries and 5, or when you add South America, 6 continents. And the Urban Art, which in particular needs this urban environment, is considerably destined to prevserve these irrepressible power which goes forward.\"Voelklingen Ironworks ceased production in 1986, it was given UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1994.The exhibition is taking place in the ironworks' 10,000 square-metre Burden Shed area.It was here that raw materials were stored for the blast furnaces, the heavy industrial charm providing an ideal setting for a culture that's made its way from city streets to the world's museums and galleries.One experienced street artist displaying his work here is 'Sen2 Figueroa', a Puerto Rican artist who's spent the last 29 years working in New York City.He says this unique exhibition space is an inspiring area in which to display his artwork.\"It's like an amazing museum. The architect put the pieces together, all the metal, all the cement, it's like art,\" he says.\"And to put one of my pieces I feel proud, I feel amazing. I think I'm doing something beautiful and nice with my life when we put these pieces here.\"The ironworks date back to 1873, the first blast furnace went into operation in 1883.While there are a variety of artists from Europe and the US, there are also works from further afield.Egyptian street artist Hanaa el Degham - who's now based in Berlin - is here exhibiting here artwork named 'The return of the Egyptian spirit�not yet realized!'The Cairo-born artist says she's not a prolific worker, instead only venturing outside when she feels she has something to say.\"I just go really outside when I feel; 'Now I want to say something'.
