drug amantadine was misused or whether farmers still use it but China's government said on Tuesday it was dispatching experts to \"take measures soon to curb the action.\" \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to a Chinese daily newspaper, Agriculture Ministry spokesman, Xu Shixin, denied the report's claim that officials encouraged farmers to give amantadine to millions of chickens in their drinking water in the late 1990s to suppress bird flu outbreaks.\u003cbr/\u003eAmantadine is meant for use only in humans.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Washington Post on Saturday cited researchers who said its misuse in poultry led to the rise of a drug-resistant form of the H5N1 virus found in Thailand and Vietnam.\u003cbr/\u003eThe World Heath Organisation asked the Chinese government on Monday to explain the report and warned against misuse of drugs that might be needed in the event of a flu pandemic.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation asked China's Agriculture Ministry about the report, said a WHO spokesman in Beijing on Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eAsia's latest bird flu outbreak began late last year and has killed 38 people in Vietnam, 12 in Thailand and four in Cambodia.\u003cbr/\u003eHealth experts worry that bird flu might mutate into a form that could easily spread from person to person, setting off a pandemic that could claim millions of
