Medium of bejewelled shoes from India
What do the singers Madonna, Elton John and former Beatle John Lennon and the former ballet diva Dame Margot Fonteyn have in common ?
Some of their favourite shoes can all be found at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, Canada.
They're just a fraction of the tonnes of footwear on show, from satin slippers to a boot for a medieval knight.
They are fine examples of history and cultures around the world,
People worldwide have a passion for shoes and the Bata Shoe Museum is proof of that.
Its collection of over twelve and a half thousand shoes include examples of the most shocking, the most beautiful and the most unusual from Eighteenth century Europe , India and the Far East and modern day footwear.
Curator Elizabeth Semmelhack promises visitors are in for a surprise.
She says the shoes always reveal something about the time, culture and people they belonged to.
The huge number of shoes means that although some are on permanent displays, others have to be rotated because they can't all be exhibited at once
The museum's mandate is to collect footwear from everywhere around the world has resulted in some unusual exhibits.
From India, for example there are golden jewelled shoes which once belonged to the Nizam (ruler) of Hyderabad.
There is also a large selection of tiny Chinese foot-binding shoes. This was an ancient trend in which the feet of young girls were tightly wrapped to stop their development and keep them small.
Semmelhack says some of the exhibits date back to the 16th century.
As expected for a museum found in North America there are kamiks (Inuit boots) and the world's largest moccasin collection.
Twentieth century celebrity shoes are particularly popular with visitors. They can find pop icon Madonna's pink spangled platform shoes alongside singer songwriter Elton John's extraordinarily high heeled black and silver shoes and singer Cher's autographed designer training shoes.
The museum was founded by Sonja Bata after she married into the family which has manufactured footwear since the 1890s.
She says the exhibitions teach visitors about other cultures and about particular times in history.
Bata believes that because shoes are often status symbols they can reveal key details about the owners place in society, the fashions of the time, the activities they undertook and in some cases shoes are even expressive of a person's religion.
Bata is fascinated by the fact that although the feet of people around the world share the same bone structure the patterns of footwear are so different.
Tourists appear to love what they discover.
Katrin Merz from Bavaria Germany is especially interested in the historical aspect of shoes and says she's enjoyed discovering how they developed
with different meanings for religion and for work.
