Close of drink\u003cbr/\u003eA man in northern Minnesota has been leading a weekly religious service with a difference, instead of a church he uses a bar on Lake Superior's North Shore.\u003cbr/\u003eChris Fletcher, a paramedic, part-time bartender and seminary student, has been drawing a small but growing crowd of worshippers to his 'Bar Church' at the 'Dunnigan's Pub \u0026amp; Grub' in Two Harbours.\u003cbr/\u003eFletcher likes the informality and lack of judgement of the 'bar church'. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Jesus' miracle, his first miracle he did was that he turned water into wine, and I think he'd be more comfortable in a lot of bars than he would be in a lot of churches right now,\" Fletcher said. \u003cbr/\u003eA native of Sudbury, Ontario, 43-year-old Fletcher grew up in the Worldwide Church of God, a small evangelical sect. \u003cbr/\u003eHe left religion behind as a young man, but was drawn back as he was hitting 40 and experiencing a series of personal crises: the death of a close friend in a car accident and the dissolution of his marriage.\u003cbr/\u003eLast spring, Fletcher was accepted in Bethel Seminary in St. Paul; he now commutes 150 miles (241 kilometres) south one to two times a week for classes. \u003cbr/\u003eInitially, he intended to incorporate work as a chaplain into his job working with an ambulance crew, but as he began his seminary studies he found common ground with a recent wave of evangelical thinkers.\u003cbr/\u003eOne Saturday night a few months ago, Fletcher was having a drink at Dunnigan's when a stranger approached and asked to talk. \u003cbr/\u003eShe shared some personal problems and as Fletcher lent a sympathetic ear, an idea was born. \u003cbr/\u003eSix months later, Sunday attendance at what Fletcher calls 'Bar Church' has grown to as many as 25 people.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowers of a larger movement in evangelical Christianity called 'the emerging church' hold similar views about moving faith away from compulsory church attendance and making it more relevant in people's lives.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Jesus always says to go out and be a light to the world, and how can you be a light to the world if you're all sitting in a church together?\" asked one bar worshipper last month.\u003cbr/\u003eFletcher wasn't the first student of the emerging church to hold a weekly service in a tavern, nightclub or other such establishment. \u003cbr/\u003eSuch gatherings have started around the country in recent years, as well as 'home churches' that serve much the same
