with an increase by 8 percent in 2013, according to Visit Berlin - day-trip locations like Sanssouci are expecting an increase in tourism.\u003cbr/\u003eCurrently around 3.5 million people make it to the Sanssouci park each year and some 350 000 also pay the 12 euro ($16.1) to enter the palace itself.\u003cbr/\u003eHeinz Buri, the director of communications for the Palaces in Brandenburg foundation, explains the why so many people make the trip to Potsdam to visit the palace and gardens:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The whole park of the palace Sanssouci was added to the UNESCO world heritage list in 1990,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The reason for this is the same reason to why Sanssouci is a wonderful place to visit, it is the combination of the art in the gardens and architecture of the buildings.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFrederick the Great built the palace as a summer retreat to get away from the daily chores of running the Prussian state.\u003cbr/\u003eThe name of the palace itself comes from French, the language spoken widely at the Royal court at the time, and translates to \"without a care.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe purchased an area called the \"deserted hill\" in 1744 and ordered a vineyard to be accommodated on the slope.\u003cbr/\u003eSoon after the vineyard was finished he ordered the \"pleasure palace\" to be built on the top of the hill.\u003cbr/\u003eThe architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff supervised the project and the building stood was finished in 1747.\u003cbr/\u003eSince then the palace became one of the iconic buildings of the Prussian empire.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as Buri explains, there is nothing particularly Prussian about the style of the building or the surrounding park.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Interestingly enough, the Prussian kings did not develop their own style of building,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They were creative plagiarists; they took different styles from different epochs and brought them here to Sanssouci. The Sanssouci palace here, which means 'without a care', is built in the classic French rococo style. Frederick the great took this style here to Potsdam and Sanssouci.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFrederick II of Prussia ruled Prussia from 1740 to 1786.\u003cbr/\u003eHe is credited with modernising the state, bringing about a Prussian Enlightenment and winning battles in the Seven Years' War.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the palace of Sanssouci visitors come face to face with the artistic and philosophical side of the king.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the rooms of the palace is called the Voltaire room after the French philosopher stayed there during long periods as a guest of the king.\u003cbr/\u003eHere in the music room visitors can still see Frederick the Great's flute.\u003cbr/\u003eGesa PÄÅ¼Ëlert, Palaces in Brandenburg foundation historical expert says the humble flute was treasured by the king:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Frederick the Great was a very musical king. He loved music, he composed a lot of music himself and he played the flute,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And here you can see the flute that he played himself as well as the piano that Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, the son of Johan Sebastian Bach, used to play.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors to the place do not only get a view of how kings and queens lived in the 18th century - there is also a piece of contemporary art to be admired.\u003cbr/\u003eThis original Andy Warhol portrait of Frederick the Great greets visitors as they enter the palace.\u003cbr/\u003eThe park of the Sanssouci palace consists of several gardens and smaller palaces and buildings.\u003cbr/\u003eA 2.8 kilometre (1.7 miles) long walking path runs through the park.\u003cbr/\u003eThe high season for the park and the palace follows that of Berlin; most visitors come in late spring or early autumn.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2013 some 55 percent of the visitors were German, 13.1 percent from France, 8.5 percent from the US and 8.1 percent from the Netherlands - according to the Palaces in Brandenburg foundation.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors might spot some curiously placed potatoes on Frederick the Great's grave, placed as a tribute to the King who was a big fan of the crop and helped make it the staple of the German diet that it is today.\u003cbr/\u003eElona and Clemens Panitz from Dresden are visiting the palace for the third time and they are impressed\u003cbr/\u003e\"The park is really well looked after. It is great to walk through the park,\" says Elona Panitz.\u003cbr/\u003eColin Ward is visiting from Chicago, US:\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is really nice. We don't have castles or anything in America. So it is definitely different.
