They hid tens of thousands of dollars of cash in their homes, you'll see in the complaint that 68-thousand (US) dollars (50-thousand euros) in cash was seized from just one defendant's house during an earlier search warrant, executed part of this case, money was hidden in a kitchen stove. rings. \u003cbr/\u003eFederal authorities said the international scam duped credit-rating agencies and used thousands of fake identities to steal at least 200 (m) million US dollars (147 (m) million euros).\u003cbr/\u003eThe elaborate scheme involved improving fake cardholders' credit scores, allowing the scammers to borrow more money that they never repaid, investigators said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The losses in this case are, in a word, massive,\" said Paul Fishman, the US attorney in Newark. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The conspirators in this criminal enterprise allegedly obtained more states and wired money to Pakistan, India, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, Romania, China and Japan.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the estimated 200 (m) million US dollars (147 (m) million euros) in documented losses was \"conservative\".\u003cbr/\u003eParticipants set up more than 1,800 mailing addresses, creating fake utility bills and other documents to provide credit card companies with what appeared to be legitimate addresses.  \u003cbr/\u003eOnce participants obtained the cards, they started making small charges and paying off the cards to raise their credit limits. \u003cbr/\u003eThey then sent fake reports to credit-rating agencies, making it appear that cardholders had paid off debts, setting the stage for sterling credit ratings and high credit limits.  \u003cbr/\u003eFishman said once the credit limits were raised, members would take out a loan or max out the credit card and not repay the debts.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe group also created at least 80 sham businesses that accepted credit card payments, Fishman said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe group would run the fraudulently obtained credit cards through the machines, keeping the money. \u003cbr/\u003eThe scheme funded a lavish lifestyle for the accused, including spa treatments, electronics and millions of dollars of gold, Fishman said. \u003cbr/\u003eIn one raid, authorities found 68-thousand US dollars (50-thousand euros) stashed in an oven. \u003cbr/\u003eThree jewellery stores within blocks of each other in a heavily Indian section of Jersey City were closed on Tuesday and their inventory was seized. \u003cbr/\u003eAll had signs advertising gold jewellery. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir metal security gates were shut, and they were guarded by FBI agents.\u003cbr/\u003eFourteen defendants appeared before a federal judge on Tuesday. \u003cbr/\u003eLawyers said one man was a taxi driver, another a limo driver. \u003cbr/\u003eMost own property in New Jersey or New York and said they were US citizens. \u003cbr/\u003eEight were released, and six remained in custody ahead of a Friday bail hearing.\u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities said many of the defendants had family ties, including a father and son.\u003cbr/\u003eFour of the defendants named in Tuesday's indictment were arrested previously, and three have pleaded guilty. \u003cbr/\u003eOthers haven't been charged, and the investigation is ongoing, Fishman said.\u003cbr/\u003eEach of the defendants was charged with one count of bank fraud and could face up to 30 years in prison and a one (M) million fine if
