Bush in the run-up to the first anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Nearly a year after the intense hunt for the Saudi fugitive began, an empty-handed Bush administration is now sticking to its assertion that the war against terrorism is greater than one man.
Scouring the mountains and caves of Afghanistan, thousands of U-S troops are hunting for the remnants of the Al Qaida network and clues to the whereabouts of its leader Osama bin Laden.
Operation Enduring Freedom continues to consume U-S troops in the longest combat engagement since the Vietnam war. And while American military leaders describe the rout of the Taliban and Al Qaida forces in Afghanistan mission as a success, they also admit it is not over.
In a matter of weeks after the September 11th attacks, 60-thousand American soldiers, sailors and airmen were sent to a region from Kuwait to Uzbekistan with the concentrated man-hunt focussed on the mountainous regions of Afghanistan.
And in the immediate aftermath of the attacks one man was quickly identified by the U-S as the most likely suspect, Osama bin Laden.
President George Bush made the hunt personal when he referred to the old Western motto "wanted dead or alive".
SOUNDBITE: (English) George W. The U-S military's working assumption is that he is alive until proven otherwise.
The growing frustration with the bin Laden manhunt was clearly visible in a Senate hearing late July.
