Radar video of asteroid JL33 \u003cbr/\u003eAsteroid 2005 YU 55 is heading our way. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the next two days this giant boulder will come spinning through space at 31,000 miles per hour (50,000 kilometres per hour) crossing between the Earth and the moon's orbit. \u003cbr/\u003eAt 200,000 miles away, this will be a close encounter of sorts, the closest in 35 years for this size of space rock.\u003cbr/\u003eIf this asteroid smashed into Earth it would make a crater roughly four miles across and a third of a mile deep. \u003cbr/\u003eLindley Johnson is Project Executive of the Near Earth Object Observation Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington.\u003cbr/\u003eHe's been watching this asteroid for five years and says there's nothing to worry about.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is a miss. We know the orbit quite well, there will not be any gravitational interactions that will affect anything on the Earth surface,\" Johnson said. \u003cbr/\u003eBut that doesn't mean hundreds of astronomers across the globe won't be watching the asteroid known as 2005 YU 55.\u003cbr/\u003eAmateur astronomers will train thousands of telescopes toward the night sky for a glimpse.\u003cbr/\u003eRadar signals from California and Puerto Rico will map the surface and look at the chemical composition, including a scan for frozen water.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Hayden Planetarium in New York City, where asteroids and parts of asteroids (known as meteorites if they enter the earth's atmosphere and make an impact) are on display, spokesman Denton Ebel told The Associated Press that although it is not dangerous, the asteroid is scientifically important.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's important to science. moon's orbit in ten hours.\u003cbr/\u003eObservations made two years ago show this asteroid - about the size of an aircraft carrier - to be nearly round and slowly spinning with a rotation period of less than a day. \u003cbr/\u003eAmateur skygazers who want a glimpse need two things: a good sky chart and a six-inch telescope or larger since the asteroid is too faint to detect with the naked eye.
