Bush got a close look at two alternative-fuel cars as part of his drive to raise awareness about alternative fuelled vehicles.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore the inspection, Bush convened a White House meeting of transportation fuel experts and researchers. \u003cbr/\u003eThey discussed hybrid engines, battery design and other technologies which the president hopes will lessen the US thirst for oil.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Americans ought to feel optimistic about our future. We are going to be driving our cars using all kinds of different fuels other than gasoline and using batteries that will able to be be recharged in vehicles that don't have to look like golf carts,\" Bush told reporters.\u003cbr/\u003eBush said his goal of reducing petrol use by 20 per cent over the next decade was realistic.\u003cbr/\u003eBush's energy proposals, made in his State of the Union address last month, include ramping up the production of alternative fuels such as ethanol\u003cbr/\u003emade from new, non-corn feedstocks. \u003cbr/\u003eThe proposal calls on Congress to require the annual use of 35 billion gallons (133 billion litres) of ethanol and other alternative fuels such as biodiesel by 2017, a fivefold increase over current requirements.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hybrid car that Bush inspected had a high-power lithium-ion battery made by A123 Systems. \u003cbr/\u003eIt can power the car for about 40 miles (64 kilometres) and recharge in five hours. \u003cbr/\u003eThe white truck, made by Phoenix Motorcars Inc. has a range of 130 miles (209 kilometres) and can be recharged in about 10 minutes with a rapid-charging unit or trickle-charged overnight with its onboard charger.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Thursday, Bush visited a North Carolina plant that's researching enzymes to break down items like corn waste and wood chips to produce
