One of the thousands of cosmetic procedures being carried out in Dubai every year.\u003cbr/\u003e41 year-old restaurant manager Irena Tsoneva - originally from Italy - has come to the London Centre for Aesthetic Surgery in Dubai for a correctional touch-up with Dr. Roberto Viel.\u003cbr/\u003eHer new lip-fillers should last 10 months before a return visit is required. \u003cbr/\u003eTsoneva also receives injections in her brow and around her nose.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Roberto Viel is performing the routine operation. He set up this clinic in Dubai in 2006 after finding many of the patients at his London Harley Street branch were from the Gulf. But now foreigners are choosing to stay - or even travel - to Dubai for their surgery.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2012, over 100,000 foreigners came to the country specifically for cosmetic surgery in an industry worth nearly USD $180 million and the market is booming with forecasts predicting 12 per cent rises, year on year.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Roberto Viel has one of the only cosmetic surgery clinics in Dubai that includes a surgery room and a post-operative recovery room.\u003cbr/\u003eDubai is quickly growing to be a global hub for plastic surgery. According to the Emirates Plastic Surgery Society, there were 60 plastic surgeons with the group in 2006 and there are now 105 in Dubai. The Dubai Health Authority says overall there are around 150 licensed surgeons working in the emirate.\u003cbr/\u003eSome industry experts claim Dubai is surpassing Beirut as a regional cosmetic surgery destination, due to many factors such as ongoing political instability in Lebanon, easy access with visa on arrival, the availability of top quality surgeons and luxury hotel and entertainment options all in Dubai. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors are not only seeing a re-direction of patients from Beirut, but they are also seeing an increase of international patients walking into their office who would have normally gone to Europe or North America for surgery, as these patients are starting to realise that the city attracts many well-known visiting doctors and has a good selection of clinics with the same standards of price and quality as in any major destination for cosmetic surgery. It is also a more convenient place to travel to for most, as Dubai is also within an eight hour flight time from two-thirds of the world's population. \u003cbr/\u003e\"So I think that more people, in my opinion, will divert from Lebanon, Beirut to come to Gulf to Dubai for these treatments also because Dubai will attract a lot of international medical doctors and surgeons with a good reputation and thus will create a good hub for healthcare in the future,\" says Dr. Roberto Viel.  \u003cbr/\u003eOne of those choosing to have surgery in Dubai rather than her native UK is 33-year-old fitness instructor and mother-of-three Emma Jones. She says prices are comparable with the UK (around USD $8,000) but the waiting lists are much shorter in Dubai.\u003cbr/\u003eJones currently lives in Dubai but through word of mouth she might persuade friends back home of the merits of a short fly-away surgery break.\u003cbr/\u003eShe is looking to have breast augmentation surgery and also to have some stretch marks reduced.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I've never had large breasts, and I have a physical job so I don't really need large breasts, but I did have before children quite full nicely shaped breasts and then obviously having three children and breast-feeding each of them for about eight months has taken its toll, and so I would just like to put back what I had before. I think just to make you feel, as any woman would probably say, you want to feel womanly it's not a vanity thing, I'm not doing it for anybody else, it's for myself,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eAttending her meeting with the doctor is Vasilica Baltateanu, who set up her own plastic surgery consultancy in 2013.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says the appeal of Dubai is that the doctors here understand the concept of subtlety.\u003cbr/\u003e\"People think that about plastic surgery sometimes that it's bad, because you only recognise the bad one, you never see a good one. For me plastic surgery is the one you can't see. You don't notice. The Dubai Health Authority will be launching an online portal at the end of the year specifically dedicated to medical tourists.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In 2012, 107,000 medical tourists came to Dubai and the revenues were roughly 650 million dirhams (USD $177 million). We are currently working on the number of medical tourists that are coming to the emirate. The annual (forecasted) increase is at a maximum of 12 per cent so in 2016 we are aiming for roughly 170,000 medical tourists and God willing, we're hoping the revenues to be at 1.1 billion dirhams (USD $300 million).
