So we didn't know it was a possibility actually. Years before when we were first starting to think about doing this, having a baby I mean, we had spoken to friends of friends who had said that they had wanted to do voluntary co-IVF.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors will also be debating procedures for gay male couples in America with some clinics bringing together egg donors, surrogate mothers and potentially using sperm from both male partners.\u003cbr/\u003eFertility consultant Dr. Alan Copperman Reproductive Medicine Associates is among those practicing what is now being called co-IVF.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"We're able to take the eggs from one woman, fertilise them with the donor's sperm and transfer them into her same sex female partner and we're calling it 'co-IVF' it really is co-parenting in many different ways and both of them get the experience of participating in the creation and having a baby.\"\u003cbr/\u003eCopperman says: \"We definitely see an increase in same sex female couples coming in and wanting to have a baby together using a variety of different options.\" \u003cbr/\u003eLeigh and Marshall are both are listed parents on baby Graham's birth certificate\u003cbr/\u003eMarshall says: \"For me I had to adjust to the idea of carrying a baby that wasn't genetically mine which wasn't something I'd really wrapped my head around before. And so that was something we worked on and we actually met with the psychiatrist at RMA (Reproductive Medicine Associates) who was really helpful in explaining sort of the concept. I mean she used words like 'Maggie was the architect and I was the builder, 'Maggie's her genetic mother, I'm her biological mother.\"\u003cbr/\u003eCopperman says: \"We definitely see an increase in same sex female couples coming in and wanting to have a baby together using a variety of different options and that's what really gave us the impetus to start publishing our data on co-IVF.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Copperman \"We're seeing a social acceptance and social awareness and I think it's going hand-in-hand with using technology to help couples have babies in ways that we wouldn't have thought possible years ago.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLeigh believes she would have found parenthood difficult if she had not been able to contribute genetically to her daughter.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"I mean Sarah is so her mommy and so who she wants when she's crying and such, you know, it's just their bond just is so strong that if I couldn't look at her and see my face in hers, I would feel like a total outsider. So I think it's great for other lesbian couples where one partner is carrying and the other is, you know, the supportive spouse, if you will, because they get to share in that experience, you know and know that at least something has carried on from them too.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe couple spent nearly $100,000 on multiple failed attempts at IVF.\u003cbr/\u003eA single IVF cycle can cost from $15,000 to more than $20,000 depending on how much embryo testing is done and whether some embryos are frozen to allow multiple attempts from one batch.\u003cbr/\u003eMany fertility specialists are willing to perform the procedure though and believe any risks are small.\u003cbr/\u003eMarshall says: \"In retrospect I would recommend it to every lesbian couple honestly. It's really the closest thing to, you know, a normal straight family having a child because we both participated in our own ways in creating her.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn the Canadian study, doctors from the CReATe Fertility Centre and the University of Toronto looked at patient's records for the past 17 years.\u003cbr/\u003eThey found that the percentage of women in same-sex relationships using the centre's donor sperm rose from 15 percent before gay marriage was legalised in 2003 to 20 percent after the change.\u003cbr/\u003eUnits of donor sperm used by same-sex couples during the same period rose from 133 to 561.\u003cbr/\u003eNew York, US, October 4, 2013 \u003cbr/\u003e1.
