The air force has requested...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eSpanish/Eng/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eAn F-B-I ballistics analysis has prompted a new investigation into allegations that the Colombian air force dropped a U-S-made bomb on a village in Colombia two years ago, killing 17 people. \u003cbr/\u003eThe air force has requested three military judges be appointed in light of the F-B-I analysis of bomb fragments found at the scene of a December 1998 blast in Santo Domingo, near the border with Venezuela. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Wednesday, a group of U-S jurists and law professors accused air force officials of covering up their responsibility for the deaths of six children and eleven adults. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir findings were made public at a news conference in Bogota by two Northwestern University professors who helped organise the tribunal. \u003cbr/\u003eThe air force says it doesn't accept the panel's findings. \u003cbr/\u003eThe mock U-S tribunal, headed by former Illinois Supreme Court judge Seymour Simon and including two Northwestern University law professors, a rabbi and an auxiliary Roman Catholic bishop from Chicago, has no legal standing. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it hopes to prod Colombian authorities into thoroughly investigating the deaths. \u003cbr/\u003eThe case is being investigated amid rising scrutiny over Colombia's human rights record as the United States increases military aid and training under a 1-point-3 (b) billion U-S dollar counter-narcotics package. \u003cbr/\u003eThe F-B-I ballistics report, performed at Colombia's request and completed in May,  determined that metal pieces found at a blast site were consistent with a 20-pound AN-M41 fragmentation bomb designed in the United States and meant to be dropped from the air. \u003cbr/\u003eThe F-B-I didn't investigate whether the Colombian air force was responsible for the deaths. \u003cbr/\u003eThe air force has previously denied dropping a bomb on Santo Domingo and said the deaths were caused by a truck bomb planted by leftist guerrillas. \u003cbr/\u003eTroops were battling guerrillas near the village around the time of the blast. \u003cbr/\u003eAir force planes and helicopters had been called in to provide air support. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"The tribunal found that 17 persons were killed and approximately 25 persons wounded, as a result of the explosion and the cluster bomb dropped by the Colombian military on the morning of December 13, 1998.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Bernadine Dorhn, Northwestern University \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish) \u003cbr/\u003e\"The tribunal recommends in the light of the Leahy Law that the secretary of State Madeleine Albright suspend all military aid to the Colombian military participating and responsible for in the operation in Santo Domingo.
