SOUNDBITE: (english) Billy Forbes, Communications officer, 175 Infantry, 29 Division\u003cbr/\u003e\"We landed day one and I landed about 8 o'clock in the morning on Omaha beach and it was a terrible sight to see and there were dead in the water, floating all around and the water was somewhat red from the blood, and the sand, they were dotted all over the sand and we had landed quite far down, to the left, next to the 1st Division sector and it took us a long time when were were coming back up and we were going to come off the beach (inaudible) and it took us a while to do it and the Germans were shelling the beach. Of course, every time a shell would fall we would fall on the ground and I lay right beside a dead American most of the times and I said to myself that I hope that shell hits him and not me cause he's already dead.\"\u003cbr/\u003e15. French village they helped liberate.\u003cbr/\u003eLester Lease and Billy Forbes were embraced in usual French tradition by a local family in the village of St. Lo.\u003cbr/\u003eFrench couple Mr and Mrs Pillet said they were keen to show the US veterans that their valour is still appreciated, even today. \u003cbr/\u003eLease and Forbes received customary French hospitality, by enjoying a glass or two of vintage French wine.\u003cbr/\u003eIt had been a long journey for the two US veterans, who have travelled back to France to join the 60th anniversary D-Day commemorations.\u003cbr/\u003eBut both men said it can't compare to \"The Longest Day\" they endured back in 1944.\u003cbr/\u003eLease and Forbes were among the first waves of  US troops that stormed Omaha beach to begin the liberation of France and Europe from the grip of Adolf Hitler.\u003cbr/\u003eForbes told APTN the scene that greeted him as he landed at Omaha beach: \"it was a terrible sight to see and there were dead in the water, floating all around\". \u003cbr/\u003eIn traditional French fashion, the US veterans celebrated their heroic efforts and remembered all those who laid down their lives in 1944: many of whom rest in peace at a US cemetery that overlooks Omaha beach. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Saturday, veterans and locals alike honoured the memories of their fallen comrades at \"Bloody
