Tilt up of tap-tap with 'Cool Baby' sign  \u003cbr/\u003eA storm of colour and music, the tap-tap is a public bus that plays music, is very brightly decorated and is a cheap and cheerful mode of transport in the Caribbean nation of Haiti. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a city with no public transport system the tap-tap is one of the few ways to get around the capital Port-au-Prince, if you cannot afford a car. \u003cbr/\u003eTaxis fares are agreed with the driver in advance, but are often prohibitively expensive for local people, which makes them scarce and used only by foreigners.  The 8 mile trip to Port-au-Prince from the airport costs $10 USD. The average wage in Haiti is little over $1 USD a day. \u003cbr/\u003eA trip on a tap-tap in Port-au-Prince is never more expensive than two Gourdes, around five US cents,  a more reasonable price for this country though many people still prefer to walk.\u003cbr/\u003eTap-taps are more than buses, they are works of art too.\u003cbr/\u003eOwners, drivers and artists work together to create stunning showpieces featuring murals, icons and images of heroes - all part of the hot competition to create the most beautiful vehicle on the street and pick up the most passengers.\u003cbr/\u003eCo-founder and Secretary of APATAH (Professional Association of Tap-Tap Artists of Haiti) Yessika Myrthil explains that tap-taps are for short trips only.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are commonly used by the people to run errands around town, go shopping or go to work. \u003cbr/\u003eEach tap-tap has a regular route around the capital, connecting the most important areas of downtown Port-au-Prince and the city centre with the neighbourhoods and poorer areas that have grown up in the hills around the city. \u003cbr/\u003eLocal authorities say they have no idea of the number of tap-taps in circulation in the capital as there is no vehicle census nor traffic regulations and the only tap-tap related association, the APATAH, has less than 200 registered members.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Port-au-Prince's population is almost 2 (m) million people and everywhere you look there is a tap-tap. \u003cbr/\u003eNot every vehicle that transports passengers is considered a tap-tap; certain things have to be in place.  A set number of seats is required, and above all, the structure and the decoration are what help define it as a tap-tap. \u003cbr/\u003eAPATAH was founded to protect the craftsmen and artists who take part in the process of building and decorating the vehicles, to safeguard their craft and to set the standard for excellency in the making of tap-taps. \u003cbr/\u003eMany tap-taps are decorated with images of local, national and international heroes including singers and sports stars.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is a preference for football players in a country passionate about the sport and football player Lionelo Messi, who currently plays for FC Barcelona, occupies a prominent spot on many tap-taps about the city.\u003cbr/\u003eSportsmen feature alongside religious images, voodoo motifs, famous singers of Haitian hip-hop or 'compas' a traditional Haitian music. Even a tap-tap owner's wife might be painted.\u003cbr/\u003eAt one of the main tap-tap workshops in Port-au-Prince, senior artist, Jean Jacques Wilfride Joseph explains how an owner usually has a good idea of how they want their tap-tap painted and decorated.\u003cbr/\u003eJoseph says they may want a religious painting or a romantic painting with Bible quotes or song lyrics written alongside.\u003cbr/\u003eHe has been in the business for over 22 years  and has seen the tap-tap move from having only two colours to being a colourful, highly decorated work of art. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the workshop he's never short of work and he employs at least a dozen of workers to help him. \u003cbr/\u003eBut even before the art work begins the tap-tap must be built and that can cost, he says, up to thirty thousand Haitian Gourdes or 820 US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eHaitians still sometimes use the term 'dollars' for their currency, which is officially known as the Gourde.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery dollar will be worth the investment for the owner of the tap-tap however as colourful and well decorated tap-taps are said to attract more passengers.\u003cbr/\u003eKeyword
