He lent his fame to bars, hotels and beaches that now draw planeloads of tourists to  the island nation.Fans of Hemingway...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eSpanish/Eng/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eCuba remembered Ernest Hemingway on Wednesday with respect, affection and not a  little gratitude. \u003cbr/\u003eHe lent his fame to bars, hotels and beaches that now draw planeloads of tourists to  the island nation.\u003cbr/\u003eFans of Hemingway in Cuba celebrated the 100th anniversary of the writer's birth with  flowers and rum cocktails near his former home in Cuba.\u003cbr/\u003eHemingway lived permanently in Cuba for 20 years and sporadically for another 11,  about half of his 62 years.\u003cbr/\u003eCubans fondly remembered this famed writer and adventurer as a romantic man.\u003cbr/\u003eOne hundred years after his birth in 1899, it is difficult not to be reminded of the more  than 20 years that \\\"Papa\\\" Hemingway wrote, drank, fished and made a home in Cuba.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral of his favorite hangouts are still important stops on the tourist circuits - the  Bodeguita del Medio where he drank Cuban \\\"mojito\\\" cocktails, the Floridita where he  imbibed frozen daiquiris.\u003cbr/\u003eTourists jammed the Floridita on Wednesday, drinking and chatting under the gaze of a  bronze bust of the bearded author presiding over the bar. \u003cbr/\u003eRun by a Cuban state tourism company, it grossed two (m) million U-S dollars in 1998.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish)\u003cbr/\u003e\\\"I'm the reigning champion from Key West, it has been a good year. \\\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Voxpop \u003cbr/\u003eEven room 511 at the Hotel Ambos Mundos in Old Havana, is enshrined as a kind of  museum. \u003cbr/\u003eThe top-floor room that he occupied between 1932 and 1939 is preserved as a simple  literary shrine that can be visited for two U-S dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Finca Vigia, a house with sprawling gardens just outside the capital, has become  the official Hemingway museum. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Wednesday, several dozen Hemingway aficionados made the pilgrimage to Finca  Vigia to pile bouquets of red roses on a table set up under an oil painting of the writer.\u003cbr/\u003eIn another part of the compound, visitors viewed a small exhibit of black and white  photographs taken of the writer on safari in Africa, in Spain during its civil war, on the  grounds of Finca Vigia. \u003cbr/\u003eAlso displayed were some of his belongings: a passport, daggers, and tickets to  bullfights in Spain.\u003cbr/\u003eCuba prepared no major national celebration to mark the centennial of Hemingway's  birth. \u003cbr/\u003eBut a special commemorative postage stamp was  presented later on Wednesday at  Finca Vigia.\u003cbr/\u003eMemories are more direct and personal in the fishing village of Cojimar just east of  Havana, where Hemingway docked his boat \\\"El Pilar.\\\"\u003cbr/\u003eFrom here, in the company of local fishermen, he embarked on some of the marlin- fishing trips that helped inspire \\\"The Old Man and the Sea.\\\"\u003cbr/\u003eHis fishing captain, Gregorio Fuentes, now 102, is still alive and for a fee of 50 U-S  dollars will share his memories.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish)\u003cbr/\u003e\\\"And on dying he left me his boat in his will to look after saying 'look after my Pilar' and  so here she stands.\\\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Gregorio Fuentes, friend of Hemingway\u003cbr/\u003eHemingway left Cuba for good after the 1959 Cuban Revolution that ousted Fulgencio  Batista and brought Fidel Castro to power.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was apparently saddened by the political rift that opened almost immediately  between Washington and Havana.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he never forgot his friends in the island\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish)\u003cbr/\u003e\\\"It was an amazing friendship from the moment we met because we were straight with  each other, in all our words.\\\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Gregorio Fuentes, friend of Hemingway\u003cbr/\u003eAnd Gregorio Fuentes will never forget him either.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish)\u003cbr/\u003e\\\"The only sadness I have in this world is to have lost him.\\\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Gregorio Fuentes, friend of Hemingway\u003cbr/\u003eIt was in July 1961 that Hemingway, sick and depressed and nearly three weeks short  of his 62nd birthday, shot himself with his favourite shotgun at his home in the United  States.\u003cbr/\u003eHavana, Cuba, July 21, 1999\u003cbr/\u003e1.
