Various, Tsvangirai being driven away in van\u003cbr/\u003eZimbabwe's opposition leader was on the way to a South African airport when word came assassins were awaiting him in his homeland on Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003eMorgan Tsvangirai, president of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), called off his trip, and it was unclear when he would return to campaign to wrest the presidency from longtime leader Robert Mugabe.\u003cbr/\u003eThe opposition and most observers say mounting violence and intimidation, mainly targeting opposition supporters, make it virtually impossible for a planned June 27 presidential runoff to be credible.\u003cbr/\u003eIn an interview with Associated press Television, MDC spokesman George Sibotshiwe said that when the president was on his way to the airport, they had received information to the effect that there was an assassination attempt being plotted by certain people in Zimbabwe. \u003cbr/\u003e\"And therefore we had to stop for a security brief with his security adviser\", he said. \"And the security brief confirmed, indeed that there was a plot being hatched to assassinate him, and therefore we had to consult with the leadership of the MDC before deciding that he can't go back.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSibotshiwe would not identify the source other than to say he or she was in a position to know of the plot, which he said was striking in its detail. \u003cbr/\u003eSibotshiwe also refused to say whether Zimbabwean government officials were implicated in the plot. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said the government has refused to take threats to Tsvangirai seriously and the opposition was working with regional leaders instead of the government to organise body guards and safe vehicles in Zimbabwe for its leader.\u003cbr/\u003eRepeated attempts on Saturday to reach Zimbabwean police for comment were unsuccessful.\u003cbr/\u003eTsvangirai had planned to address a party caucus in Harare, Zimbabwe's capital, on Saturday and a rally in the second Zimbabwean city of Bulawayo Sunday. \u003cbr/\u003eOther party officials would lead those events, Sibotshiwe said.\u003cbr/\u003eSibotshiwe said party officials would consult their own security experts and regional leaders for advice. He said Tsvangirai would return \"at the earliest opportunity\".\u003cbr/\u003eSibotshiwe said that despite escalating violence, the late runoff date and now the assassination threat, Tsvangirai would take part in the runoff.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Withdrawing from the runoff would not assist the Zimbabwean people in the short or long term\", he said. \"Withdrawing from the runoff would only hand power to Robert Mugabe.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTsvangirai has survived three assassination attempts, including one in 1997 by unidentified assailants who tried to throw him from a 10th floor office window. \u003cbr/\u003eLast year, he was hospitalised after a brutal assault by police at a prayer rally, and two days later was in court charged with incitement to violence.\u003cbr/\u003eImages seen around the world on that occasion of his bruised and swollen face have come to symbolise the plight of dissenters in Zimbabwe.\u003cbr/\u003eTsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change says that more than 30 of its supporters and activists have been killed since the first round of voting March 29, and that attacks are increasingly targeting its top leaders.\u003cbr/\u003eTsvangirai won the first round, but, according to official results, fell short of an outright majority.\u003cbr/\u003eTsvangirai claims he won the first round outright, but nonetheless agreed to take part in a runoff after the official results were announced May 2. He said, though, that the runoff should be held within three week's of the announcement of results, as Zimbabwe law stipulates. \u003cbr/\u003eInstead, Zimbabwe electoral officials announced Friday the runoff would be June 27, eight weeks after the results were announced, prompting concern Mugabe's forces would use the time to orchestrate more attacks on opposition supporters.\u003cbr/\u003eAt a ruling party central committee meeting Friday, Mugabe said ZANU-PF must work hard for victory to \"repair the damage\" suffered March 29.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the opposition was backed by \"a hostile axis of powerful foreign governments\" and global corporate enterprises looking to promote their own interests in Zimbabwe.\u003cbr/\u003eForeign Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, meanwhile, said no
