There have been calls for an apology by the British monarch for the massacre at Jallianwala Bagh, which occurred during British colonial rule in India. Official British figures put the death toll at 379 with some 1,200 injured.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are mixed feelings in Amritsar itself over the apology.\u003cbr/\u003eOn 10 April 1919, after rioting had broken out in the city, the local British commander, General Reginald Dyer, called out his troops and ordered them to fire indiscriminately into the angry but unarmed crowd. In efforts to escape, many people jumped into a well in Jallianwala Bagh, which is now the focal point of a memorial garden at the massacre site.
