Justice at a ceremony in Washington DC.\u003cbr/\u003eChief Justice John Roberts administered the oath to Kagan in a ceremony at the court. \u003cbr/\u003eJoined by family and friends, Kagan pledged in the oath to faithfully and impartially uphold the law.\u003cbr/\u003eAfterward, she smiled broadly as onlookers stood and applauded.\u003cbr/\u003eThe former Harvard Law School dean was most recently solicitor general. \u003cbr/\u003ePresident Barack Obama chose her to succeed retired Justice John Paul Stevens. \u003cbr/\u003eRepublicans have criticised her as a political liberal, but the Senate confirmed her appointment with a vote of 63-to-37.\u003cbr/\u003eKagan won't be formally installed as a justice until October 1 in a ceremony at the start of the court's new term. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever she will be able to begin assuming her duties as a justice, which include reviewing cases and emergency appeals filed to the Supreme Court.\u003cbr/\u003eKagan, 50, joins female Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor on the nine-member court.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first woman in the court's history, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, retired in
