So different from New Zealand. And ended up coming back and basing myself here as an artist," Kelk says.
He quickly found an apartment and studio space and started working closely with the Strychnin gallery, which specialises in showcasing contemporary art by young artists based in Berlin.
For Kelk, having the freedom to create his figurine art without apologies was a new experience.
"I think the core of it is the freedom here," he says.
"That you can do anything and get away with it. I think compared to New Zealand you have just the feeling of freedom, of being able to just do your artwork and get away with doing what you are doing and not get judged in any way."
Berlin now has around 500 galleries in the city, according to the city's cultural affairs department.
This is second only to New York, a city with a far larger population than Berlin's 3.4-million inhabitants.
Jutta Nixdorf is an international-specialist on contemporary art at Christie's auction house.
Based in Zurich, Nixdorf travels to Berlin on a weekly basis to find new artists and galleries to work with.
She says Berlin's current art scene is reminiscent of an earlier time in New York.
"They compare Berlin to the New York of the 1970s and 1980s when there was a similar energy and this vibe of something is happening and being created right now and not fully established yet," she says.
Nixdorf travels around Europe, and Berlin's art scene is buzzing across the continent - and beyond - she says.
Much of it has to do with the creativity of Berlin itself. Journalists, artists, and creative visionaries are coming to the city to exchange ideas, she says.
"They love the energy of the city. They love the exchange with art which is not only like money driven but it is intense, it is intellectual, it is multifaceted, there is a broad range or younger artist, more established artists. And that is what makes Berlin so special, that the art is actually happening here," says Nixdorf.
Certain areas of Berlin have now become cultural centres brimming with art dealers and galleries.
The central district of Mitte was established early on as a centre for Berlin's art scene.
Art-dealer Javier Peres has one of his two Berlin based galleries in Mitte.
Peres rose to prominence in the art world in the early 2000 when he pushed a stable of artists in to the mainstream of the art world, earning a reputation as one of the most influential gurus of contemporary art.
He has operated galleries in New York, Los Angeles, and Athens but has been based in Berlin since 2005.
Peres says he had to move to Berlin to stay ahead of the latest art trends. Berlin has become the undisputed contemporary art capital of Europe, and has surpassed London, he says.
Berlin as the cultural capital of Europe is not a new trend says Peres. It is merely a return to the glory days before Adolf Hitler's rise to power, and the Berlin Wall.
"It was up there with Paris and New York, you know. It was very liberal city. It was a city where artistic people interested in culture wanted to come. And, obviously that was stopped during the war and the post-war period.
