Wide of Moussa and Osman in press conference\u003cbr/\u003eArab countries said the Sudanese government needs more time to end the crisis in its troubled western Darfur region, where purportedly state-backed Arab militias are accused of killing thousands of African villagers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 22-member Arab League, which held an emergency meeting Sunday on Darfur, also rejected \"threats of military intervention in the region or imposing any sanctions on Sudan.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe head of the Arab League, Amr Moussa spoke out in defence of Sudan, saying its government had already taken some steps towards fulfilling its obligations under agreements made recently. \u003cbr/\u003eMoussa said, \"There is a report to be submitted by the Secretary General to the (UN) Security Council. This report should reflect the progress that has been achieved, the cooperation by the government of Sudan, the implementation of the agreements that have been concluded.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMoussa also said that Arab countries in north Africa were willing to take part in a peacekeeping force to help calm the situation in Sudan's remote western region and urged Arab League members to provide more humanitarian help to the area.\u003cbr/\u003eHe called for peaceful and just solution to the problem \"away from foreign intervention,\" a reference to threats by the United States to impose sanctions on Sudan, or the prospect of an international peacekeeping force being sent to Darfur if efforts to end the crisis fail, as suggested by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Arab League's show of support for the Sudanese government came as Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo offered to host peace talks starting Aug. 23 to resolve what has been called the world's worst humanitarian crisis.\u003cbr/\u003ePrevious talks to end the 18-month conflict fell apart July 17 after rebels walked out, saying the Sudanese government had ignored existing peace agreements.\u003cbr/\u003eAs many as 30-thousand people have been killed, and one (m) million people have been forced to flee their homes in Darfur where Arab militias, purported to be backed by the Sudanese state, are accused of killing thousands of African villagers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN Security Council passed a resolution on 30 July, which the United States pushed for, giving Sudan 30 days to disarm the Arab Janjaweed militias blamed for the violence or face diplomatic and economic penalties.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the Sudanese government denies backing the Janjaweed.\u003cbr/\u003eSudan's Foreign Minister, Mustapha Osman, said what was needed for the region was \"to increase the number of the monitors and to increase the number of the protection forces that protect the monitors\". \u003cbr/\u003eOn Wednesday, the United Nations and Sudan signed a new agreement requiring the Arab-dominated Khartoum government to create safe areas in Darfur within 30 days so civilians can search for food and water and work their land without fear of attack.\u003cbr/\u003eThe \"Plan of Action for Darfur\" would halt all military operations by government forces, militias, and rebel groups in these safe areas, which are likely to be set up in camps where thousands of Sudanese have taken refuge and around towns and villages which still have large populations.\u003cbr/\u003eThe agreement, which was reached by Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Osman Ismail and UN special representative Jan Pronk, was endorsed by the Sudanese Cabinet on Sunday. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is expected to be signed on Monday in Khartoum.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile the Sudanese Foreign Minister said one of the rebel groups operating in the country had links to Israel.
