He was at his Beverly Hills home and his wife, band\u003cbr/\u003esinger Ginny O'Connor, was with him. Late in March, the\u003cbr/\u003espokeswoman confirmed that Mancini had been undergoing treatment\u003cbr/\u003efor an undisclosed cancer for several months and had been\u003cbr/\u003ehospitalized for blood clots. Still, he continued working in a\u003cbr/\u003erecording studio with lyricist Leslie Bricusse on a stage version\u003cbr/\u003eof \"Victor-Victoria.\" They had won the Academy Award for their\u003cbr/\u003eoriginal score of the 1982 film that starred Julie Andrews and\u003cbr/\u003eRobert Preston. In April, Mancini was feted for his 70th birthday\u003cbr/\u003ewith a gala performance with such stars as Miss Andrews, Andy\u003cbr/\u003eWilliams, John Williams and Luciano Pavarotti. Unlike many movie\u003cbr/\u003ecomposers, Mancini wrote scores that were thoroughly hummable. His\u003cbr/\u003ethemes for the \"Pink Panther\" comedies and the \"Peter Gunn\" and\u003cbr/\u003e\"Mr. Lucky\" TV series became classics. Nominated for Oscars 18\u003cbr/\u003etimes, he won statuettes for the songs \"Moon River\" (1962) and\u003cbr/\u003e\"Days of Wine and Roses\" (1963) and the scores of \"Breakfast at\u003cbr/\u003eTiffany's\" (1962) and \"Victor-Victoria\" (1982).
