Earlier today the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit was engaged in a fire fight on the Mosul air field in the north. One marine was wounded. The marines returned fire but the attackers escaped and we have no idea who they were. Also in the north, US special forces discovered a very large weapons cache south of Kirkuk. This cache is in 40 different bunkers and contains multiple rocket launch rockets, artillery rounds and other munitions including, significantly, 50 S-A 7s, the hand-held surface-to-air missile.\"\u003cbr/\u003e9. conflict.\u003cbr/\u003eReacting to a report in the New York Times newspaper, Rumsfeld said the chances of permanent bases were so low that the subject had not been discussed in his presence.\u003cbr/\u003eIn response to reporters questions at a Pentagon briefing, Rumsfeld acknowledged that the US was reconsidering its military footprint in the region. \u003cbr/\u003eBut he added that it was unlikely the US would need Iraq for military bases, resulting in one marine being injured.\u003cbr/\u003eRumsfeld also said the US had inspection teams inside Iraq searching for evidence of weapons of mass destruction. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said the US government would \"obviously look with favour on\" Iraqis who provided information on hidden materials.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever he declined to confirm a US newspaper story that said a team had been told that Iraqis destroyed and buried chemical weapons and biological warfare equipment days before the beginning of the war.\u003cbr/\u003eUS
