It's Mexico's signature drink known the world over.
Now, residual biomass derived from the agave plant used to make Tequila is being used to produce fuel.
The project is being carried out by a company called Carbon Diversion America Latina (CDAL) in the Mexican western state of Jalisco and aims to produce renewable fuel to replace fossil fuel (diesel 9 or bunker fuel) used in industrial furnaces and boilers.
The company is in the process of registering a NAMA (Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action) proposal submitting it to the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), regarding the switch from fossil fuels to the use of biomass.
But already, the first developed plant is selling agave briquettes.
Francisco Villasenor is the man behind the company. And to the company owners the sales price of this product is below the cost of keeping use of diesel, bunker fuel or gas. This makes it (agave bagasse briquettes) very cheap."
According to the Tequila Regulation Council figures it takes 3.5 kgs (7.7 lbs) of agave to produce 1 litre of tequila. In the process 10 litres of vinasse and 2kgs (4.4lbs) of bagasse are produced.
Munoz says this is a business opportunity.
"Agave bagasse is an available biomass that can be used in benefit of the Tequila Industry. It is not just the fact of the bagasse going to waste, or being left on the environment, we have to take care of that, but this is a business opportunity."
In order to produce tequila, the agave plant core is first cooked and then crushed in mills. The remains of the plant are called bagasse.
There are currently several efforts in Jalisco State - known as Tequila country - to give some use to the bagasse as compost, and even the Tequila Regulation Council is working on a project to produce biodiesel (babethanol) from agave waste, but for now Carbon Diversion is the first operating plant to process agave bagasse to be used as a source of heat.
Ernesto Naranjo, General Director of the Jalisco Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development says funding from the EU could turn the bagasse into a source of energy generation.
"There are European Union funds being used in the agave bagasse research and it's heat power. for the drink manufacturers creating vinasse and bagasse.
Ernesto Naranjo says the former problem is now an energy solution for most manufacturers.
He says: "Instead of
