Wide shot of press conference \u003cbr/\u003eThe defence ministers of Britain and France met aboard a French aircraft carrier off southern England on Wednesday and signed agreements aimed at creating closer military planning and cooperation between the two countries.\u003cbr/\u003eUK Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon and French Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie also held a cocktail party aboard the Charles de Gaulle carrier off Portsmouth to mark the centenary of the Entente Cordiale, the historic pact that ended centuries of warring and hostility between France and Britain.\u003cbr/\u003eHoon said the letters of agreement would lead to a greater co-operation between England and France in both strategic planning and military development.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said it would have particular significance to plans by the British Ministry of Defence to build two new aircraft carriers to be operational by 2008.\u003cbr/\u003eHoon said the Charles de Gaulle, a 40,000-ton carrier that entered service in 2001 with a capacity for 40 aircraft, would act as a model for Britain's new carriers as well as for another carrier being commissioned by the French navy.\u003cbr/\u003eAlliot-Marie said, \"The Entente Cordiale paves the way to lasting fruitful co-operation between France and Britain. Today our genuine strategic partnership equips us to tackle together the challenges ahead.\"\u003cbr/\u003eShe said last weekend's celebrations in France marking the 60th anniversary of D-Day gave France and Britain a \"a chance to show relations were back to normal.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAlliot-Marie said Europe's plans to improve its defence forces would not lead the United States to criticise the move as a challenge to NATO.\u003cbr/\u003eIn an earlier statement, Hoon said British and French forces \"bring their commitment and determination to NATO and to the EU, resolved as allies and partners to confront threats together.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFrench and British forces have jointly engaged in operations in Bosnia, Afghanistan and the war on
