serving British Prime Minister to set foot in Argentina.\u003cbr/\u003eMr Blair made the short but symbolic journey across the border from Brazil into the territory of the former enemy against the spectacular backdrop of the Iguacu Falls on the river Uruguay.\u003cbr/\u003eMr Blair had held his first meeting with Argentine president Fernando De la Rua on the Brazilian side of the border. \u003cbr/\u003eBrazilian president Fernando Henrique Cardoso also attended the talks.\u003cbr/\u003eMr Blair and Mr De la Rua then held a further brief meeting at the Sheraton Hotel at Puerto Iguazu.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth men had already agreed that they would not discuss the Falklands or the 1982 conflict between the two countries.\u003cbr/\u003eInstead, with fears that Argentina could default on its 128 (b) billion dollar debts, triggering a new financial crisis, Mr Blair was anxious to concentrate on the global economy.\u003cbr/\u003eMr Blair and Mr De la Rua travelled together by car for the 40-minute journey from Foz do Iguacu in Brazil to Puerto Iguazu.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the first sights to greet the Prime Minister as he crossed the border was an official looking blue and white road sign declaring: \"Las Malvinas son Argentinas\" - the Malvinas (Falklands) are Argentinian.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir arrival at the Sheraton hotel was relatively low-key.\u003cbr/\u003eAs they emerged from their motorcade Mr De la Rua ushered in the Prime Minister through the hotel's glass doors where he was greeted by local dignitaries.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was in marked contrast to former Argentinian president Carlos Menem's visit to London three years ago when he laid a wreath at the memorial to the British Falklands war dead at St Paul's
