U-S Anti Drugs Chief\u003cbr/\u003eFor a long time Peru was the world's leading producer of the coca leaf - in most cases the crop was smuggled in to neighbouring Colombia where the cocaine was manufactured.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's estimated 175,000 acres (70,000 hectares) are dedicated to growing coca leaves - Peru's rich Andean soil is a perfect environment for the crop.\u003cbr/\u003eBut according to the Peruvian government in the past year coca leaf production has dropped leaving Colombia as the main grower and manufacturer of the drug.\u003cbr/\u003eThe success is said to have been due to crop substitution programs which allow Peruvian farmers to branch out in to other forms of agriculture.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the government programs have also been criticised by some who say that the money never arrives in to the hands of the farmers\u003cbr/\u003eAnd cynics say that the drop in coca production is simply due to falling coca prices in Peru.\u003cbr/\u003eLima, April 21, 1998\u003cbr/\u003e1.
