Brennan, the former Supreme Court Justice.\u003cbr/\u003eCurrent and former Supreme Court justices gathered solemnly to pay their respects to a  former friend and colleague.\u003cbr/\u003eMembers of Congress, cabinet secretaries and diplomats arrived by the busload at the  cathedral.\u003cbr/\u003eMany were there to mourn the loss of a man they once knew.\u003cbr/\u003eFor others, it was simply a time to pay tribute to a legacy.\u003cbr/\u003eJustice Brennan served the US Supreme Court for 34 years, and became known as its  leading liberal figure.\u003cbr/\u003eBy the time he retired in 1990, Brennan had gained recognition as the most influential  judge of the century.\u003cbr/\u003eHis opinions shaped the landmark \"one-person, one-vote\" principal and expanded the  rights of free speech.\u003cbr/\u003ePresident Clinton called Brennan one of his heroes, adding that Brennan's America was  \"America at its best.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (overlaid)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Throughout our history, a few powerful ideals have transformed the lives of our people.   And throughout our history, there have been a few individuals so devoted to those  ideals, they could hammer them on the anvil of history to reshape our land and our  future.
